The Basics
The Haven in Cloquet is one of a number of treatment options offered by Haven Chemical Health Systems. In operation since 2000, Haven Chemical Health Systems provides residential programs for men and women in addition to operating four outpatient facilities, all serving the residents of southern Minnesota.
Located in Cloquet, Minnesota and nestled along the St. Louis River, The Haven in Cloquet is one of only a few drug and alcohol programs north of the Twin Cities. Bob Haven, founder and president, has been in the recovery business since 1974 and has an extensive resume. The facility itself is small but very warm, with comfortable group rooms full of sofas and cushioned chairs and a traditional classroom for educational groups.
Treatment and Staff
The outpatient program at The Haven in Cloquet is Intensive Outpatient (IOP), but levels off as clients progress. Men and women who take part are asked to commit to 30 group sessions (averaging three per week) and individual therapy once every two weeks. Clients with co-occurring disorders are scheduled for individual therapy on a weekly basis. Primary therapeutic modalities include CBT, RET, family systems dynamics and reality therapy. IOP is a combination of group therapy and educational classes with topics that include addiction studies, the impact of addition on health, coping skills, managing anxiety, depression and mindfulness training, goals group and relapse prevention. In addition, clients are given homework assignments and are asked to share their findings in process group. Homework topics include 12-step work, affirmations and accomplishing goals. Group size varies, with a limit of 15 people in each session. Groups take place on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 am until noon or 5:30 to 8:30 pm. Individual therapy sessions are scheduled at the client’s convenience.
Once clients have attended at least 20 sessions and begin to meet goals and complete homework assignments, the frequency of their visits can decrease. This allows people to stretch out the 30 session commitment, providing an extended length of contact with their counselors.
The treatment team consists of LADCs certified in the state of Minnesota. While counselors do address co-occurring disorders, individuals on medication must see an outside psychiatrist or physician for medication management.
Extras
The Haven in Cloquet considers the role of the family as significant in the recover process. The family program meets on the first and third Tuesday of every month, from 6 to 8 pm. Facilitated by a licensed substance abuse counselor, the sessions are didactic, describing the nature of addiction and its effects on families. Family members also have the option of attending individual counseling and are provided with resources for continued support.

The stand out at The Haven in Cloquet is the emphasis on family involvement and the added support loved ones receive. Always a bonus in an outpatient program is the inclusion of dual diagnosis support and flexibility in the treatment schedule.
