MinneapolisThe Basics

Haven Chemical Systems is a substance abuse treatment company that has been offering substance abuse treatment services across Minnesota since 2000. One of their facilities, Paul’s Place, provides gender-specific men’s residential treatment in Farmington, Minnesota. Treatment follows an evidence-based, 12-step model.

Residential treatment for women is  offered at Rebecca’s Residence in Scandia, Minnesota, and Margaret’s House in Mendota Heights, Minnesota.

Accommodations and Food

Paul’s Place clients live in a new and spacious home that is located in a suburb of the Twin Cities. A large expanse of green around the property provides space for residents to enjoy the outdoors, weather permitting. The house can accommodate six men, who share bedrooms that are simply furnished with twin beds and limited storage space. The facility has a common area with a TV, but viewing time is limited due to the busy schedule.

Residents eat three meals a day that are prepared by the rehab’s own cook. Menu items tend to be basic and filling, like sandwiches for lunch and a meat-and-potatoes type dinner, although there are healthier options as well.

Treatment and Staff

Paul’s Place offers a high-intensity, 12-step and evidence-based treatment for residents that lasts an average of 30 days. The program focuses mostly on identifying behaviors and thought patterns that may stimulate the urge to drink or use drugs but does not offer some of the frills—like experiential treatments and daily recreation—of other rehabs. Treatment includes group therapy, 12-step meetings, relapse prevention, addiction education and individual therapy (only for those with co-occurring disorders).

A typical day consists of about six hours of treatment off and on throughout the day, starting at 9 am and ending at 9 pm. Residents have meal breaks in the early afternoon and early evening and often have a 12-step meeting during the evening.

Paul’s Place staff consists of LADCs, a consulting psychologist, a nurse and operational staff. The staff-to-resident ratio is about one-to-one.

Extras

Haven Chemical Systems offers outpatient treatment at a few different locations in Minnesota—Shakopee, Woodbury, Waconia and Cloquet—that includes individual therapy, group therapy and addiction education.

Aftercare at Paul’s Place varies depending on a resident’s progress, but typically includes continued individual or group meetings at one of the outpatient facilities or referrals to 12-step meetings. Aftercare is not included in the total cost of treatment.

In Summary

While residents can’t expect any extras, Paul’s Place offers a professional and experienced staff, new accommodations, an intensive treatment program and a smaller treatment group. Prospective residents should note that Haven Chemical Systems’ residential facilities often have a waiting list of anywhere from three days to two weeks.
