Promising a “unique approach to recovery,” A Forever Recovery in Battle Creek, Michigan provides personalized treatment for each of its clients, and thus eschews any one program structure. Its emphasis is on offering options, though it also has several suggested program tracks residents can take.
Accommodations and Food
A Forever Recovery has a 60,000 square-foot facility located on 14 wooded acres in Battle Creek, with expansive grounds overlooking a private lake. The facility also provides opportunities for residents to take lakeside walks, have campfires and enjoy the retreat atmosphere. Inside the facilities, earth tones and warm colors mark the therapy rooms, lounges and walkways in an attempt to offset any clinical feeling the décor might otherwise project. Clients share bedrooms with one or two other roommates, with an average of about 120 at the facility at any given time. Given the high volume, meals are not exactly gourmet, but residents are still well fed with three meals provided each day by on-site cooks. Meal times last an hour each, and give clients a chance to socialize; there’s also a salad bar available throughout the day.
Treatment and Staff
Within Forever Recovery’s choose-your-own-adventure approach are five basic paths. There’s a faith-based track catered to Christian-specific recovery, a self-help track which incorporates basic 12-step philosophy, a cognitive approach which rejects the previous two models, a holistic treatment track based on yoga and meditation and an indigenous approach that combines the 12 steps and Native American traditions. In keeping with the customization, A Forever Recovery does not impose mandatory lengths of stay for its clientele. It does, however, provide a year of aftercare where alumni talk to their contact every day on the phone, with calls tapering off as they progress. Finally, the facility does provide detox on-site as well, in a smaller building that holds 14 at a time.
A Forever Recovery maintains a large staff. Each resident’s journey begins with an evaluation by an on-site MD; there are also a team of case managers, counselors and a nursing staff to handle clients’ other needs. A Forever Recovery also keeps four security guards on duty at all times; with a large volume of residents there is a practical component to this staffing choice, though one must still consider whether they could thrive in this sort of environment.
Those looking to stay physically active while they get sober will find plenty to like at A Forever Recovery. There are a plethora of activities to choose from—residents can work out in the facility’s fully-equipped gym, strum a guitar or shoot hoops on the outdoor court; for those who prefer to stay inside, they can always play pool as well. Finally, as an added bonus for clients who elect the holistic approach, martial arts training is also available.
A Forever Recovery’s stated purpose is to let each of their residents design their own recovery path. While this is potentially advantageous for those apprehensive about more traditional facilities, potential clients should still consider this route carefully.
