Woodbury MinnesotaHaven Chemical Health Systems Adult Outpatient

Established in 2000, Haven Chemical Health Systems was founded by Bob Haven. Still president of HCHS, he has a long history treating chemical dependency, opening treatment centers across the country starting from 1975. The Haven Systems began as a single outpatient facility in Woodbury, Minnesota. Today, they include three additional outpatient centers in Waconia, Shakopee and Cloquet, two residential treatment centers for women and one for men. Though adult programs are offered at all outpatient locations, adolescent treatment is currently only available in Woodbury.

Treatment and Staff

Adult outpatient substance abuse services at Waconia, Woodbury and Shakopee are provided after an initial assessment is completed. Licensed Drug and Alcohol Counselors (LADCs) evaluate and determine the presence of any co-occurring disorders in order to make appropriate recommendations. For those needing medically monitored detox or serious mental health treatment, referrals are made to other facilities, while those needing residential treatment are admitted to one of Haven’s three programs.

Primary treatment is provided through an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), which is made up of three levels and is based on 12-step principles. Clients are required to maintain complete abstinence from mood-altering chemicals and can only return to treatment once sobriety is re-established. Clients move toward established recovery goals and progress is periodically reviewed. If satisfactory advancement has not been made, clients are able to re-evaluate their treatment plans. This all happens under the guidance of their clinical team.

Initially, clients meet three times a week for sessions that are three hours in length. Eventually, clients step down to two and then one session a week, totaling around three months of treatment. The program has a flexible structure, great for people with work or parenting commitments but still seeking recovery. Group therapy, interactive lectures and education sessions are available in either day (9 am to 12 pm) or night (6 pm to 9 pm) options, with individual therapy arranged at convenient times.

Activities and assignments are tailored to meet individual strengths and needs, while still using evidence-based practices, including CBT and DBT. Books, pamphlets and workbooks are given out, while non-readers have access to audiobooks, AV equipment and videos to assist with projects. All of these items are available at the center libraries. Through group therapy, education and assignments, clients develop essential life skills. By incorporating cognitive skills work, clients are able to learn new positive strategies and how to implement them, how to build on personal strengths and how to initiate changes that promote a healthy life.

Case management is offered at Waconia, Woodbury and Shakopee and provides support through personalized services. These are essential for clients that have emotional, logistical or other barriers that complicate the recovery process. Individual and family sessions can occur in the client’s home or office, while transport to and from treatment can also be arranged. Case managers also coordinate with community agencies, arranging social, medical and mental health services. Assistance with obtaining sober housing, gaining employment or entering school is also provided.

Extras

The Family Program is offered every other week; the specific night varies from location to location. Treatment consists of group therapy with other families, as well as optional individual and family counseling.

The relapse prevention program is offered to those that have made attempts at sobriety but resumed substance use. Successful or unsuccessful completion of primary chemical dependency treatment is acceptable; clients just need to be willing to adhere to the structure and rules of the Haven program. This program utilizes the same therapeutic modalities as the IOP, but with a focus on relapse prevention. Clients learn about the relapse process, how to avoid triggers and devise a plan of action.

Two DWI programs are offered only at the Haven in Shakopee in eight or 16-hour versions. Both meet state requirements and the appropriate option is legally determined. Treatment consists of group therapy and education sessions, with additional therapy an option.

Aftercare services vary from client to client, but may include continued individual therapy and referrals to local 12-step meetings.

In Summary

Adult outpatient services provided by The Haven Chemical Health Systems are valuable and essential for clients seeking treatment. The interactive sessions, evidence-based practices and regular evaluation of progress means clients remain actively engaged in their recovery.
