Wellington KansasThe Basics

Sumner County Mental Health Center (SCMHC) is a community mental health facility located in Wellington, Kansas. Established in 1984, SCMHC’s mission is to provide high-quality behavioral healthcare and addiction services that are not only cost effective but that reflect the values of the community at large. While the program provides a number of mental health and ancillary services, the primary focus is outpatient treatment for alcohol and drugs. The program’s approach embraces SCMHC’s core values—human dignity, community, service, integrity and motivation.

SCMHC treats a wide range of clients including those referred from the court/judicial system, people with co-occurring disorders, seniors, adolescents, people with serious mental illness (SMI) or PTSD and American veterans. In order to provide services to anyone in need, it offers a sliding scale fee based on income and other factors.

Treatment and Staff

SCMHC provides individualized outpatient treatment which includes individual and group therapy using CBT, DBT, trauma-informed care, play therapy, behavior modification care and activity therapy. Clients can also participate in couples and/or family therapy and have access to intensive case management and medication management.

The program is not 12-step based but clients are encouraged to attend community meetings. SCMHC offers dual diagnosis support and co-occurring disorder treatment, but not detox.

SCMHC’s outpatient program is intimate, with only two Licensed Addiction Counselors (LACs) on staff—one an LSCSW and the other an LPC. Because this is a mental health facility, the umbrella of SCMHC offers psychiatric care, including emergency walk-ins and a crisis intervention team.

Extras

SCMHC provides services for the hearing-impaired as well. Additionally, a wide range of other programs outside the scope of substance abuse are available. Assertive community treatment, diet and exercise counseling, housing services, psychosocial rehabilitation services, suicide prevention services, tobacco cessation counseling, vocational rehabilitation services, individual psychotherapy and domestic violence treatment are all available. Clients can also access consultations with physicians, liaison services with the courts and other social service agencies.

In Summary

SCMHC is a private mental health facility with a strong substance abuse component. Using an individualized, client-centered approach and dual diagnosis support, this program provides a high level of care from a professional staff that is affordable to the community at large. Those with financial limitations may pay via Medicaid, state insurance, military insurance, ATC vouchers and cash payments as determined by a sliding scale.
