Pueblo ColoradoThe Basics

The Parkview Medical Center was founded in 1923 and is currently the largest non-government and non-profit facility in Pueblo County, Colorado. PMC offers general and behavioral health services in Pueblo with two inpatient programs—one for adults and the other for adolescents—who are struggling with chemical dependency and co-occurring disorders.

Detox services are also available for clients in need of medically-supervised stabilization. Outpatient programming is available for clients who have completed primary treatment.

Accommodations and Food

The Chemical Dependency Unit at PMC offers beds for those requiring detox or a safe space to begin recovery. The adult facility has 30 beds in total in a clinical hospital setting. While the program is housed in the hospital, the CDU is in a building apart from the main hospital. Some bedrooms are private but most are shared between two clients. Clients are accommodated in twin beds and have a small amount of storage for personal belongings as well as basic shared bathrooms with showers. Located in an adjacent building is the adolescent unit which has 10 beds in total, with boys and girls in separate gender-specific halls. A nursing staff is on duty all hours of the day and night to monitor vitals.

All meals are served in a cafeteria and include healthy and comfort food options. The adults have more options at meals with desserts and coffee but sugar is limited for the adolescents. The adult ward also has a gym for exercise as well as a day room with TV and a collection of DVDs to enjoy during downtime. The adolescent unit does not have a gym, but the young people are taken to a nearby playground during the week to play basketball and get fresh air and recreation. The adolescents also may do workout DVDs like “Insanity” and “P90X.”

Treatment and Staff

Parkview Medical Center provides inpatient treatment for adolescents and adults in two separate programs. Before admission into one of the two programs, all potential clients must schedule an appointment to be assessed by the intake staff. Since the facility does provide detox services, clients requiring a medical supervision are given priority and Suboxone is available through the supervision of a psychiatrist specializing in medication-assisted treatment (MAT). Clients who need dual diagnosis support and medication management are given additional time with their psychiatrist to ensure their medication is effective. All programs are attended on a voluntary basis.

Both inpatient programs are similar in format with slight variations in material covered. Treatment is tailored to be relevant and accessible for each age group. The inpatient programs on average last for no more than 30 days and have a 12-step model as a foundation. Throughout the day, clients attend a maximum of three group therapy sessions around meals and downtime. Groups focus on minimizing self-destructive behavior, psycho-education and developing relapse prevention skills. All groups are facilitated by mental health professionals with credentials that include LADCs, LPCs and CSWs.

In addition to group therapy, clients regularly see their primary therapists for individual therapy sessions. Family therapy is also included during treatment to ensure the family is involved in the healing process. Different techniques are utilized during the course of treatment including Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), CPT, DBT and EMDR, to accommodate the client’s individualized treatment plans and the recommendations of the staff. Clients are required to attend 12-step meetings during their stay and working with a sponsor is highly recommended.

If a client is ready to step down the intensity of their treatment, they may enroll in the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). Three to four days per week, clients attend group, individual and family therapy for four hours each day. Evening and morning hours are available if the client needs to return back to work or family obligations. Outpatient clients are regularly drug tested to ensure they are remaining abstinent during the treatment process.

Extras

Aftercare is available for substance abuse program clients. Once per week, aftercare clients may attend a group therapy sessions with other aftercare clients. These groups focus on relapse prevention and making sure that each individual is still growing in their recovery process.

In Summary

Parkview Medical Center is a general health care provider that also offers behavioral health services. The substance abuse treatment program provides inpatient and outpatient tracks as well as detox services. A well-credentialed and diverse staff provides therapy, medication management and monitoring for all. PMC is ideal for individuals who are willing to change and dedicated to the pursuit of recovery and a new way of life. Clients with severe chemical dependency and co-occurring disorders will find PMC a comprehensive program for addressing all their mental health concerns.
