Located in Malibu, California, The Canyon neighbors other world-class facilities on some of the most picturesque acreage the west coast has to offer and is just 30 miles North of Los Angeles International Airport. Nestled in the Santa Monica mountain range in the heart of an internationally recognized location of healing, Peace Park is 240 acres of tranquil and unexploited beauty.
The program at The Canyon is holistic multi-level residential treatment program that integrates the 12-step philosophy of recovery as well as numerous evidence-based practices. Detox and a family program are available, as is adjunct outpatient care in nearby Santa Monica.
Food and Accommodations
The Canyon is in a $2.5 million, 4,000 sq. ft. secluded property with an exquisite view of the surrounding picturesque Santa Monica mountains and the ocean beyond. It is comprised of two eight-bed facilities, one for women and one for men. Rooms are shared but quite spacious and furnished luxuriously, with private rooms available for an additional cost. Clients are accommodated in rooms with vaulted exposed-beam ceilings, four-poster beds, private fire places and luxury linens.
Group meeting rooms are comfortable, cozy and reminiscent of an upscale ski lodge. The campus features a fitness room, sweat lodge, meditation dome, saltwater pool and spa. All of the food served is organic, non-GMO and locally sourced. All dietary requests and requirements are accommodated.
Treatment and Staff
On the more technical side, The Canyon’s staff of 15 specialists is trained in various therapies like Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET), EMDR, CBT and DBT. A wide variety of in-house support groups are available such as trauma resolution, healthy boundaries, codependency, managing mood, grief/loss and anger management and provide education on relapse prevention and continuing care planning for long-term success with sobriety. Family therapy is offered and encouraged as part of the treatment plan. Clients work with their counselors to treat addiction from a psychological, emotional, spiritual, physical and social perspective. A focus on co-occurring disorders is also present in the various treatments.
The treatment program has four levels: detox and stabilization, reflection, preparation and lastly action. As clients progress through each level, their treatment evolves to focus on different topics. The individualized nature of the program also dictates topics covered during each phase of treatment.
The detox and stabilization phase is medically monitored and can last anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. Once stabilized, clients begin their highly structured treatment. Each day incorporates different treatment modalities and activities.
The Canyon also offers outpatient treatment (at a facility in nearby Santa Monica), partial hospitalization (PHP) and day treatment as well as intervention services, sober escorts and travel support. The staff consists of a psychiatrists, MFTs, clinical psychologists and LCSWs.
Extras
In addition to the traditional treatment methods used at The Canyon, there are also numerous alternative therapies used to assist clients on their recovery journey including adventure therapy, art therapy, equine therapy and cooking classes. Holistic therapies such as yoga, meditation, mindfulness through walks and a sweat lodge are also employed daily.
Extensive aftercare is also integrated into recovery, with on-campus gender-specific sober accommodations that also includes 15 hours of weekly therapy. Access to transportation is permitted and meals are provided.
