The Basics

Located in Greenwich, Connecticut, Wilkins Center for Eating Disorders was founded in 1982. This established facility features a multidisciplinary staff that works together to provide medical, nutritional and psychiatric care of treatment for eating disorders and related behavioral issues. The company offers flexible outpatient programs for adults and adolescents.

Treatment and Staff

Before beginning treatment, all clients go through an initial intake and assessment process to help the staff develop an individualized treatment plan. While outpatient plans can vary significantly to fit each client’s schedule, basic care generally consists of about nine hours of therapy a week and the more intensive options meet around six hours a day, five days a week. Treatment also includes meals and snacks supervised by registered dieticians with support for a range of dietary restrictions, including gluten-free and vegetarian meal options. Dual diagnosis support is available for a range of co-occurring disorders as well, including anxiety, bipolar disorder and depression. Family therapy can be added as well.

All programs include both individual and group therapy rooted in evidence-based treatment practices including CBT and DBT. Group sessions may also include art therapy, relapse prevention techniques, trauma-informed care, yoga, psychoeducation, cooking skills and nutritional counseling.

Led by founder Diane Mickley, MD, the staff at Wilkins Centers consists almost entirely of female MDs, LCSWs, psychiatrists, psychologists and additional Master’s and PhD-level counselors. Additionally, Licensed Clinical Psychologist James Wegner, PhD has been at the Wilkins Center for more than 20 years. He specializes in males with anorexia and bulimia.

Extras

Parents of younger patients are seen as crucial collaborators in successful treatment. For adolescent clients at the Wilkins Center, the client and parents meet regularly with a senior staff member who remains involved throughout the treatment process. The setting is warm and informal, with a strong personal commitment to each person and family.
