Pittsburgh PennsylvaniaThe Basics

Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic is a psychiatric hospital located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. With the main hospital as well as remote clinics,Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic community members are given access to a range of services for mental illness and chemical dependency.

The hospital has been helping the community for over six decades, with a chemical dependency unit open since 1986. Services are available with varying levels of intensity on an outpatient basis and individualized to each client’s unique needs, allowing for flexible treatment plans that incorporate evidence based treatment methods and dual diagnosis support.

Treatment and Staff

Prior to enrollment, clients must visit the emergency room for a general health and psychological screening which includes a bio-psycho-social assessment to determine the needs for medication or detox prior to treatment. Inpatient detox is available as well as Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) with Suboxone and methadone.

Clients are enrolled in either a Partial Hospital Program (PHP), Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) or a standard outpatient track as determined by the assessment process.

The PHP track is highly structured and clients attend treatment sessions four to five days a week, totaling at 20 hours for two to four weeks in duration. Sessions are both group and individual therapy and facilitated by mental health professionals with credentials to work with chemical dependency. Family therapy and medication management are also available.

The IOP track has group and one-on-one sessions scheduled three times a week for up to 10 hours per week. IOP is a less intensive track that allows clients to live at home and meet work commitments while attending treatment. Evening, daytime and weekend sessions are available so clients can customize their schedule.

The standard outpatient track is a step down from IOP, meeting just one to two times per week. Psychoeducation groups are available as well as groups for smoking cessation. The clinical staff utilize CBT and DBT practices during therapy.

Dual Diagnosis support is available for clients with co-occurring mental health disorders. Specialized groups and additional individual sessions are offered to support overall recovery with medication monitored by a psychiatrist. Attendance at community 12-step meetings is encouraged.

Extras

WPIC offers a range of services for their clients. If more intensive therapy is needed, referrals are given to the hospital’s inpatient facility.
