WestCare Florida OutpatientThe Basics

With a number of facilities clustered throughout the state, WestCare Florida serves men and women struggling with addiction and co-occurring disorders. All the locations in Florida are subsidiaries of the nationwide WestCare Foundation, which was founded in 1973. In addition to WestCare Florida’s residential treatment programs, a number of flexible outpatient treatment plans are available.

Treatment and Staff

WestCare Florida’s main two outpatient options, both of which are exclusive to clients sentenced through drug court, are offered in Clearwater and St. Petersburg. The more intensive of the two is the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) which lasts 16 weeks and has clients meeting four times a week for three hours per session. Though the program relies mostly on group therapy, clients also go to individual therapy once a week; these sessions implement evidence-based practices, primarily CBT. The less intensive standard outpatient plan meets for 12 weeks, twice a week for three hours per session. Individual therapy occurs once a month.

In both programs, group sessions cover a range of issues including success strategies, relapse prevention, abstinence from criminal behavior, addiction studies, anger management and gender-specific issues. Drug testing is mandatory and those on parole or probation also meet with their case managers and parole officers every week. Clients with co-occurring disorders can see psychiatrists for medication management services. All individuals must also attend three 12-step meetings a week and present proof of attendance.

The staff at WestCare Florida consists of MDs, RNs, CSACs, MFTs, LMFTs, LMHCs, case managers and additional Master’s-level clinicians.

Extras

As mentioned, WestCare Florida is an extremely broad organization with many other services available throughout the state. These include residential treatment programs, emergency intervention shelters, transitional housing for homeless clients and summer camps for children with behavioral disorders. A full list of ancillary services is provided on its site.

Overall, WestCare Florida Outpatient is a flexible, affordable option for clients coming out of the justice system in need of treatment. Evidence-based therapy, life skills classes, 12-step support and case management all make for a well-rounded program and viable resource for the communities served.
