The Basics
Located in Portland, Oregon, Volunteers of America Oregon is a CARF-accredited organization offering flexible and affordable behavioral health services to low-income individuals throughout the state. The facility is a subsidiary and state-specific wing of the nationwide non-profit Volunteers of America, an organization originally designed to provide accessible care to veterans. In addition to Volunteers of America Oregon’s residential treatment options for court-ordered clients, it also provides flexible outpatient options for adults struggling with addiction.
Treatment and Staff
Before beginning a program, all individuals go through an initial intake and assessment to help staff members determine their specific needs. Detox services are not included though clients in need can get referrals as necessary. Though programs vary depending on the intensity of each client’s issues, each includes individual and group therapy with evidence-based care including CBT and Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET). Programs are 12-step based and also feature trauma-informed care sessions specific to the needs of veterans. Support for clients with co-occurring disorders is also provided.
The staff at Volunteers of America Oregon consists of MDs, RNs, LMHCs, LACs, case managers and additional Master’s-level clinicians.
Extras
Clients can also attend programming for gambling addiction. Other options include prevention services, re-entry or transitional counseling and residential treatment for court-ordered clients avoiding jail time. Outreach prevention programs are also provided for teens at nearby Milwaukie (Oregon) middle and high schools. Finally, Latino and Asian clients can attend culturally-specific versions of the program described above.
In Summary
Overall, Volunteers of America Oregon is a well-rounded and community-oriented organization with a range of flexible programs for clients in early recovery. Treatment relies on 12-step principles and a range of evidence-based methods to help participants reintegrate into society. Volunteers of America Oregon is an invaluable resource to the demographic it services.
