Staunton VirginiaThe Basics

Valley Community Services Board (VCSB) is an outpatient health care provider in Northern Virginia that has specialized in mental health, substance abuse and developmental disabilities for over 45 years. Funded by state and local governments, VCSB’s services are exclusive to the residents of Staunton, Waynesboro or the counties of Highland and Augusta. Adhering to a strict “no hate or discriminate” policy, VCSB treats anyone within their district, regardless of their ability to pay.

Valuing competence and compassion above all else, VCSB provides person-centered care, tailoring each treatment plan to fit the individual, including dual diagnosis and co-occurring disorder support.

Treatment and Staff

While substance abuse is a major component of the individualized treatment plans, VCSB is also committed to serving those clients in need of an IOP for only mental health issues and development disabilities. A range of therapeutic modalities are employed, including CBT and DBT, 12-step meetings, psychiatric services, crisis and prevention services, community outreach and MET—all of which aim to help the individual gain self-awareness and self-efficiency while also feeling supported by their community, family and staff.

Clients participate in both individual and group therapy. VCBS employs over 300 professionals, including psychiatrists, direct-care staff, LCSWs and LPCs—all of whom hold at least Bachelor’s-level credentials. Staff-to-client ratio is one-to-three.

In order to provide more structure during the early stages of IOP and recovery, VCSB schedules meetings and treatment during both daytime and evening hours, Monday through Friday. Additionally, there is a special Women’s IOP which aims to accommodate the unique needs and schedules of women in recovery. Pregnant women are guaranteed services within 48 hours of contacting VCSB and liaison services with August Health are also available for pregnant and post-partum women.

Extras

To help clients maintain healthier sober lives, VCSB offers a step down option for aftercare once the IOP track has been completed. Additionally, community liaisons connect clients to community services including Family Outreach Programs, the Department of Social Services and the Wounded Warriors Program. For the convenience of clients, there’s also an on-site pharmacy.

A unique feature of VCSB is the ASL-accredited staff members who provide treatment for the hearing-impaired, including full-deaf services like TTY teleconferencing.

In Summary

VCSB is a government-funded outpatient treatment facility serving Northern Virginia populations suffering from mental health issues, development disabilities and substance abuse. In addition to a range of evidence-based treatment practices, 12-step meetings and services aimed at meeting the physical, mental and emotional needs of each individual, clients are also educated on the range of services available to them in their communities at large. VCSB is committed to providing care to any and all members of the community who are in need.
