Omaha NebraskaThe Basics

The VA of Nebraska Western Iowa Health Care System is a government organization serving the veteran population of Nebraska. Among the many services offered is outpatient substance abuse treatment. With a vast network of mental health services, the substance abuse serves are provided by professionals who are qualified to work with individuals in need of dual-diagnosis support and other mental and physical health concerns. Therapists and other professionals work with clients to address mild to acute symptoms of addiction.

Treatment and Staff

Clinical services are available for eligible veterans with special attention given to the specific mental health concerns veterans may face. Clients meet with an intake professional who assesses their needs and current mental health status. Individualized treatment plans are developed in accordance to the assessment. Common issues treated among VA clients include PTSD, bipolar disorder, depression and trauma.

For clients who are in need of detox, the VA provides a three- to five-day on-site program. Suboxone is available for clients who require medication-assisted treatment. For clients needing medication for alcohol dependence, psychiatrists provide prescriptions for Antabuse. Also treating nicotine addiction, clients are given access to replacement therapy methods. All clients given prescriptions receive medication management and attend specialized group therapy sessions.

In addition to group sessions, clients have individual therapy with either an LADC or LCSW. Depending on a client’s treatment plan, they are enrolled in either the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) or basic outpatient. Groups are scheduled seven days per week with evening hours to accommodate family, work and life schedules.

Therapy techniques are evidence-based using Motivational Interviewing (MI), CBT and DBT techniques. All clients are taught relapse prevention skills and how to handle triggers.

Outside support for clients is offered on-site including 12-step meetings. Attendance is required to strengthen recovery and the 12-step principles are an essential aspect of continuing care and relapse aversion. If a client wishes to attend another fellowship, counselors have referrals for local Celebrate Recovery and SMART Recovery groups.

Extras

The VA offers couples and family counseling services for qualified veterans. Therapy sessions are conducted by MFTs and LADC staff. Sessions are held on a case by case basis and are scheduled independently.

All treatment options are affordable and provided by a credentialed staff of mental health professionals. With special programs tailored to veteran-specific issues including the treatment of co-occurring disorders, clients are given every opportunity to establish a firm foundation of sobriety. Clients are connected with community resources to support their new sobriety, including AA meetings and housing assistance.
