Dallas TexasThe Basics

Located in the Texas capital of Dallas, the Urban Inter-Tribal Center of Texas (UITCT) clinic is an Urban Indian Health Organization (UIHO) assisted by the Urban Indian Health Institute. The mission of the UITCT is to support the health and well-being of urban Native American communities through information, scientific inquiry and technology. UITCT provides outpatient alcohol and substance abuse treatment as well as detox and referrals to inpatient facilities.

Treatment and Staff

The outpatient program supports and provides counseling to clients aged 14 and over for up to six months. It provides its own individual counseling utilizing CBT, cognitive restructuring, transaction analysis, Rational Emotive Therapy (RET) and Brief Therapy. Clients are asked to attend weekly hour-long counseling sessions for six months. Dual diagnosis support is also available for clients who have been diagnosed by an outside psychiatrist.

While there is no regular group therapy, UITCT does provide a quarterly group called the Healing Circle. This program allows for family members to share their story and the struggles they have encountered in dealing with loved ones with substance and/or alcohol abuse issues.

The program does incorporate the 12 steps, but for clients who are not receptive to this philosophy, other options—such as attending church services—are also incorporated into treatment.

Altogether, UITCT has 22 staff members (including the dental department and the pharmacy). There is a staff medical doctor as well as a physician’s assistant, nurse practitioner and two medical assistants. Specialized staff for the substance and alcohol abuse treatment counseling is limited to one LCDC.

In Summary

The substance and alcohol abuse treatment program at Urban Inter Tribal Center of Texas provides its target demographic—American Indian and/or Alaskan Natives—with culturally sensitive treatment. With a strong referral program, this basic outpatient program is ideal for Tribal members seeking flexible treatment that incorporates a range of evidence-based methods and the 12-steps.
