Cherry Hill New JerseyThe Basics

For over 20 years, Unity Place has provided the residents of Camden County, New Jersey, with long-term outpatient substance abuse treatment, specializing in helping those with co-occurring disorders. Unity Place also has a second location in Atlantic County that serves a population with more severe mental and developmental disorders.

Unity Place’s mission is to provide services that “take place in a therapeutic environment with the specific goals of preventing any hospitalization, relapse and decompensation by assisting clients to develop community based living skills.”

Treatment and Staff

Clients are referred to Unity Place through several New Jersey community and healthcare agencies. They usually begin treatment at the Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) or Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) level, which includes group therapy three to five times each week and individual therapy as-needed (many clients have individual therapists and psychiatrists at other programs and facilities).

Treatment is offered Monday through Friday from 9 am to 3:25 pm. IOP and PHP clients begin treatment in the morning, and PHP clients stay for additional afternoon sessions. Treatment plans last an average of three to nine months and clients can step down the frequency of attendance as they stabilize.

Clients work with the treatment team to set recovery goals which include sobriety and job skills training. Clients are also encouraged to attend 12-step groups outside of treatment hours. Groups explore topics such as co-dependency, working the steps, addiction education, grief and loss, anger management and the Stages of Change model.

The treatment team includes LPCs, LADCs, CADCs and consulting psychiatrists and APNs who can administer medication for dual diagnosis support.

Extras

Clients are provided lunch and snacks each day they attend treatment. Additionally, family therapy is available for loved ones who wish to take an active part in a client’s recovery. The treatment team makes sure clients have access to case management services and are aware of the programs and supportive services for which they’re eligible. Once clients are ready for standard outpatient/relapse prevention levels of care, their counselor refers them to a less-intensive local outpatient program.

In Summary

Unity Place provides long-term community-oriented outpatient treatment that focuses on clients with co-occurring disorders. With a treatment team that integrates services with other local agencies and healthcare providers, Unity Place might be a strong choice for those with chronic addiction and/or mental health disorders that require a wide safety-net of supportive services.
