The Basics
United Counseling Services (UCS) offers outpatient treatment for mental health and substance abuse in the quaint town of Bennington, Vermont. Its Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and intensive Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) are offered to adults struggling with addiction and co-occurring disorders. Treatment includes group and individual therapy and individualized programming that is based on the 12 steps.
Treatment and Staff
The initial step to receiving treatment at UCS is going through as assessment process that determines the level of care needed, and then an individualized treatment plan is put into place. On average those entering into the IOP participate in about nine hours of treatment per week, though it can be more if the client’s needs call for it. The group sessions are co-ed and kept small in number in order to allow for personal attention from the therapist. Topics in group range from relapse prevention, anger management and self esteem to coping skills and identifying triggers. There are also individual sessions, usually once a week, offered to clients in the IOP.
Treatment approaches include AA and NA principles and the facility works closely with several self-help community organizations in the area and can connect clients to 12-step meetings. The evidence-based methods implemented include CBT, ACT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and the Stages of Change model. For clients with a dual diagnosis, medication management and therapeutic support are available.
There is also a specific treatment track for clients who are addicted to opioids through daily dosing of buprenorphine. Otherwise, detox is not facilitated in this program.
Staff members of UCS include psychiatrists, nurses, LCSWs, CADCs and LPCs.
Extras
Aftercare includes step-down treatment to once a week group therapy. There are family and couples counseling, and family members of those in treatment are also connected to the Alanon community.
UCS offers a specialty program for clients who were recently released from incarceration that includes support services, counseling, case management and, in some cases, housing assistance.

The multidisciplinary team of physicians and therapists offer a variety of treatment options and approaches at United Counseling Services. It’s a very well-rounded outpatient program that works with clients to create a support network with virtually unlimited time in treatment. There are also solid resources for dual diagnosis clients and loved ones of those struggling with addiction.
