The Basics
For over 130 years, United Community and Family Services has been providing community-based healthcare in the Norwich, Connecticut area. A pillar of health and wellness since 1877, UCFS now has 12 locations in and around Norwich and provides a full range of outpatient services, including primary medical care, women’s health services, elder care and dentistry. Its outpatient behavioral health services program uses evidence-based practices to treat substance abusers and those with a dual diagnosis, as well as clients with any number of other behavioral issues.
Treatment and Staff
UCFS has five separate locations where clients can work with clinicians in individual sessions and/or group therapy. Although the specifics of treatment depend on the individual, counseling for substance abusers, addicts and those with co-occurring disorders uses both DBT and CBT. Most clients attend a 12-week program, with the frequency of attendance depending upon on the individual’s needs.
UCFS offers a wide variety of therapy groups tailored to specific needs, many of which are gender-specific. Special discussion groups include: co-occurring disorders, relapse prevention, introduction to the 12 steps, general sobriety, gambling addiction, insomnia, autism, grief, meditation and mindfulness, medication management, abuse, depression and trauma. In addition to these adult groups, UCFS has a full schedule of group therapy sessions for children and adolescents.
The organization treats those with dual diagnosis as well. On-site general practitioners and psychiatrists ensure that clients who need medication or other physiological treatment can receive it. UCFS does not have a detox facility or offer any inpatient substance abuse treatment.
UCFS’s treatment plans are not 12-step based, although it will assist those who would like to attend peer recovery programs and even hosts Gambler’s Anonymous meetings at its facilities.
There are 28 employees at UCFS’s largest outpatient office in Norwich. Staff there includes psychiatrists, nurses, clinicians and administrative employees. The caregiving professionals boast a full range of credentials, including MFTs, LCSWs, LPCs, LADCs and advanced practice registered nurses (those with post-graduate education in nursing.) No matter what the specific needs of a client, UCFS likely has a person whose professional background and experience will make a good fit.
UCFS accepts private insurance, although most of its clients pay through Medicaid. It helps uninsured clients apply to Access Health CT, Connecticut’s health insurance marketplace.
Extras
Along with its outpatient services, UCFS manages and runs a variety of community-based behavioral health services, including a number of in-home, family programs.
Family Based Recovery is an intensive in-home program for families with a caregiver who has co-occurring substance abuse problems and infant children. The FBR team—a supervisor, two clinicians, and a family support counselor—ensures that children grow up in drug-free, stable homes by providing care right where it is needed. There is no fee for this service, but the Department of Children and Families refers all clients.
Additionally, a special area of focus for UCFS is gambling addiction. The “Bettor Choice” program offers counseling for those with gambling addiction as well as their families and even features an Internet chat-line specifically for compulsive gamblers.
In Summary
UCFS provides a huge variety of services at its many locations. It boasts a tradition of proven community-based medical care that goes back more than a century, and features a wide range of specialty areas and a large number of special focus groups. In other words, UCFS is an accessible, convenient program for recovery.
