The Basics
Founded in 1986, Two Rivers Behavioral Health System in South Kansas City, Missouri is a large psychiatric hospital with a number of behavioral health programs for clients of all ages—including inpatient detox and outpatient treatment for substance abuse. Its individualized plans offer primary support while also integrating care from other health professionals to create the most comprehensive program for well-rounded recovery.
Treatment and Staff
After an initial assessment, clients work with staff members to develop a program that best suits their needs. Those in need of detox are referred to the seven-day inpatient program where clients (18 years and older) undergo a medically-monitored stabilization phase. During this period, clients share double-occupancy hospital rooms with one other resident and no outside food or electronic devices not allowed. Days consist of group and individual therapy and at least one on-site AA/NA meeting. Three meals a day are provided in the facility’s cafeteria and dietary needs are accommodated. This program is offered as a standalone service; however, clients often continue on to one or the other treatment track.
The Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is two weeks long and meets Monday through Friday, from 9 am to 3 pm, with lunch provided. The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is longer in duration and meets on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 12 to 3 pm or 5:30 to 8:30 pm. Both programs consist of group and individual therapy using DBT and psychoeducation, as well as relapse prevention strategies. While groups allow a maximum of 20 clients, they tend to average about 12. One-one-one sessions are scheduled independently based on the needs of the client. Those with co-occurring disorders meet with staff psychiatrists who can also offer medication management. Although programs are not 12-step-based, clients are encouraged to attend outside AA/NA meetings.
Though Two Rivers does its best to be understanding about personal conflicts, clients who miss two consecutive treatment sessions or who are inconsistent in their attendance are discharged from the program.
Staff consists of psychiatrists, RNs, LPCs and LCSWs.
Extras
Though Two Rivers doesn’t offer an aftercare program at this time, clients can be referred to outside agencies.
The facility offers extensive and comprehensive programs for children, adolescents and adults with mild to severe mental health issues.

Overall, Two Rivers Behavioral Health System is a comprehensive facility that offers multi-tiered treatment for addiction and mental health to residents of the Greater Kansas City area. With several options available for enrolment, clients in various stages of chemical dependency or who have a dual diagnosis can find what they need here. While the hospital-like setting may deter some, its programs put a major focus on support for the individual—going as far as to act as a primary contact, connecting with clients’ outside practitioners in order to offer them the most synergistic and effective treatment. Two Rivers Behavioral Health System remains a valuable local resource with programs worth consideration for detox and outpatient care.
