The Basics
Based out of Sandy, Utah, Turning Point Centers is a behavioral health organization that provides comprehensive treatment for a chemical dependency. Founded in 2006, its non 12-step based programs are offered on an inpatient and outpatient basis, and specialize in recovery from addiction to alcohol, marijuana, heroin, cocaine, methamphetamines, oxycodone and other perscription medications. The facility is also equipped to treat clients with a dual diagnosis; struggling with anxiety, depression and bipolar disorder. Its outpatient treatment is offered by way of Day Treatment and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP).
Treatment and Staff
Before beginning a program, clients undergo an initial assessment and intake process so that counselors may develop an individualized treatment plan for them. All outpatient programs include a combination of individual and group therapy that uses evidence-based practices, such as CBT, REBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI), as well as EMDR and psychoeducation. Turning Point Centers also employs some holistic treatment methods, like art therapy and a ROPES Course.
The Day Treatment program is the most intensive and geared towards clients transitioning out of inpatient care. It meets five days a week, from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm, and includes two weekly individual sessions and daily process and psychoeducation groups and that focus on understanding addiction, self-care, distress tolerance, increasing motivation, recovery management, relaxation techniques and aftercare planning. It can accept up to 36 clients at one time.
The IOP is is a minimum of eight-weeks long and meets on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6 to 9 pm. Clients are assigned a counselor and have one individual therapy session a week in addition to group, which cover a wide-range of topics including phases of recovery, dealing with cravings, having fun in sobriety, identifying triggers, anger management, relapse prevention, health and nutrition, life skills, codependency, building self-esteem, relationship and family education. Additionally, the first and third Tuesday of every month is family night, from 6-7:30 pm. The IOP can accept up to 16 clients at one time.
While Turning Point Centers employs a non-12-step approach, it does support the fellowship and introduces clients to how the program works. Though no meetings are help on-site, clients are encouraged to attend outside AA/NA groups to supplement their recovery.
Staff includes physicians, physician’s assistants, LMHCs and additional Master’s-level counselors.
