The Basics
Timothy Harrington is the CEO (Chief Empowerment Officer) of Sustainable Recovery, Inc., a Denver, Colorado-based company that offers customized substance abuse recovery support nationwide. Harrington and his team work to separate the individual from their addiction. Sustainable Recovery Inc. offers a full continuum of recovery support, everything from “pre-hab” (interventions) to rehab referrals and recovery coaching.
The Background
Timothy Harrington embarked on his journey to help others with substance abuse issues after hitting his own bottom with addiction. He found himself living in his car in Malibu, California, before seeking help at a local rehab. Based on a wonderful experience in early recovery with a sober companion, he was inspired to open Sustainable Recovery, Inc. in 2008 and aims to help those in early recovery or who continue to struggle in sobriety. Harrington is a trained ARISE interventionist and has also studied the Breakthrough Intervention style. He worked as a sober companion in his early recovery and also as a rehab tech at Promises.
The Approach
Sustainable Recovery’s case managers—or “change coaches”—use a mindful approach to helping clients. Coaches assigned to the client and family learn the ins and outs of their daily lives and background. They take the time to understand where the family and individual are coming from and work to understand their goals for getting help and staying clean.
Integrating the clients and families’ desires, the coach tailors the treatment plan to best suit everyone, and then works with the individual throughout their program. Whether clients remain in treatment or not, the coach meets with them regardless and tries to encourage them to return, or to figure out another course of action.
They use WRAP, which stands for Wellness Action Recovery Plan—an action plan that is self-developed and designed by clients and their families. It is introduced by the interventionist during their time with the families. In addition, the coach can aid in helping the client return to work or school, take the role of the main contact in place of a family member or friend and design personal goals for the client to reach while in treatment and after. There are also family and couples counseling services available.
Post-Intervention and Summary
Tim Harrington’s Sustainable Recovery approach gives clients a way to transition into and out of treatment as seamlessly as possible while including family throughout the process. The fact that he’s on board until the end—even if the client leaves treatment—and connects clients with peer support has given Tim Harrington (and his staff) a solid reputation in the industry.
