The Sanctuary at Sedona Review

The Sanctuary at Sedona was created 10 years ago as an alternative to traditional 12-step oriented residential substance abuse treatment centers. Founder Dean Taraborelli, a veteran of multiple stints in rehab for addiction to pain killers, believes that most treatment centers in the US focus on the symptom management of addiction rather than its root causes. He founded the Sanctuary to help addicts take ample time to explore the physical and emotional causes of their substance use through evidence-based and experiential therapies and improved nutrition and fitness.

Accommodations and Food

The Sanctuary is located in Cornville, Arizona, a small town adjacent to Sedona. The campus features stunning views of the desert red rocks. The Sanctuary only treats seven residents at one time and most have single rooms. The light-filled ranch home features a traditional décor with new age touches. Beds have high thread-count sheets and each room is decorated with a large Mandala to inspire calm and healing.

The Sanctuary employs a chef who creates organic, non-GMO meals to clients’ dietary needs and preferences. The facility also provides organic toiletries to clients upon entry. Clients may have cell phones and personal computers while in treatment.

Treatment and Staff

Residents are asked to commit to 30 days in treatment and some may extend their stay up to 90 days. Clients in need of detox are referred to a nearby facility that often works with clients of The Sanctuary. Once they’re able to enter residential treatment, clients receive a treatment plan that includes group therapy as well as experiential therapy such as yoga and sound healing. Clients also have meditation classes as well as nutrition classes.

Each day, ample time is allotted in the treatment schedule for each client to have individual therapy. The Sanctuary believes that effective treatment must be based on the individual’s needs and dedicates 90% of their treatment plan to individual therapy and coaching. Therapy uses CBT and DBT and clients in need of help to process trauma can receive EMDR. Co-occurring disorders are addressed in group and individual therapy, but if a client’s mental health diagnosis escalates, the Sanctuary takes them to a nearby mental health provider for medication management and/or additional therapy.

The treatment team at the Sanctuary includes psychologists, LMFTs, nurses and a consulting psychiatrist.

Extras

Clients are encouraged to take advantage of Arizona’s scenic beauty and outdoors life and the treatment team regularly arranges hiking trips. Clients are also taken to a nearby spa for exercise and treatments.

Family members can arrange visits throughout treatment and clients may undergo family therapy if loved ones wish to participate. For aftercare, clients co-create a discharge plan with their therapist that may include on-going therapy and peer support meetings in their area.

In Summary

The Sanctuary at Sedona’s holistic, individualized residential treatment program has been serving clients for over a decade. By working closely with each client to target their health and emotional needs, The Sanctuary at Sedona has proven adept at treating and inspiring even those whose substance use has been resistant to prior treatment.
