The Basics
The Camp Recovery Center was established in 1984. In addition to its comprehensive residential treatment program, it also offers outpatient care at two locations in Northern California: San Jose and Scotts Valley. The Camp provides substance abuse treatment and dual diagnosis support to adults and adolescents. The outpatient tracks include an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) with group therapy and individualized treatment. Programming utilizes both holistic approaches and 12-step support in a supportive setting.
Treatment and Staff
The Scotts Valley outpatient program is on the same campus as the residential treatment, 25 acres in the redwoods of the Santa Cruz mountains. The San Jose location is more of an office setting. It’s typical for IOP clients at the Scott’s Valley campus to have recently completed inpatient program there.
The IOP consists of three evenings a week, Monday, Wednesday and Friday, for three hours each. Usually the group sessions meet from 6 to 9 pm or 5 to 8 pm, depending on location. Sessions are usually in a group setting with anywhere from 12 to 25 clients. There are individual therapy options every couple of weeks or so, though not necessarily a regular aspect of the outpatient experience, as the aim is to form a community feel.
Groups discuss relapse prevention, identifying triggers and learning to communicate in a clearer fashion with loved ones. Therapy approaches are evidence-based and include CBT, DBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Though the overall philosophy of The Camps program is based on the 12 steps, and the clients are expected to attend regular outside AA or NA meetings, it also offers resources for SMART Recovery or Life Ring. For clients with an existing co-occurring disorder there are medication management programs. The IOP usually runs about 12 weeks but there are some clients who require less time in treatment.
The dedicated staff of The Camp includes Master’s-level clinicians with accreditations such as LADC, RN and CADC, in addition to support staff.
Extras
There is an aftercare alumni group that provides program graduates with peer support, and recreational activities and retreats, scheduled intermittently throughout the year. The Camp also facilitates an an extensive family program.

Outpatient treatment through The Camp Recovery Center offers different levels of intensity according to each client’s specific needs. While the atmospheres may differ, with the Scotts Valley campus having a wilderness feel and the San Jose location being more urban, the treatment is consistent no matter where it’s administered. The continued care programming available through The Camp is also an invaluable asset to the communities it serves.
