The Basics
St. Francis Healthcare Campus is a faith-based health care facility in Breckenridge, Minnesota, a small town on the North Dakota border. Though St. Francis primarily focuses on providing physical therapy for those recovering from physical injuries, they also have a program for behavioral health issues. Mental health counseling and substance abuse treatment programs are offered through St. Francis’ outpatient services at the Hope Unit.
The Hope Unit provides separate tracks for substance abuse and mental health issues but refers clients with co-occurring disorders to outside facilities. Treatment for chemical dependency at the Hope Unit includes individual and group therapy. Alumni are offered ongoing support through an aftercare program.
Treatment and Staff
Treatment begins with a thorough evaluation to determine the client’s needs. Clients work with case managers to develop specific treatment plans. Group meetings are available Monday through Friday and each usually lasts an hour or an hour and a half. Though daily attendance is not mandatory, clients typically attend three meetings a week.
During sessions, therapists and counselors use evidence-based therapy such as CBT and DBT. Some sessions include educational topics while others focus on issues such as changing habits and managing behaviors. Relapse-prevention services are also offered using a CBT approach. Individual therapy occurs on a weekly basis, though frequency varies on a case-by-case basis. The programs for mental health and substance abuse are designed the same way, so those seeking help for mental issues follow a similar schedule.
Staff members at St. Francis include LADCs, therapists, an MD, a psychiatrist and an RN.
Extras
Families can arrange for joint therapy sessions with a counselor. Treatment plans often call for attending at least two AA/NA meetings a week in addition to therapy but 12-step involvement is not required as a part of the curriculum. Once clients complete outpatient, they are encouraged to commit to a six-month aftercare program that includes monthly check-ins at no extra charge.
