The Basics
Founded in 2000, Specialized Outpatient Services (SOS) in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma originally just provided treatment for substance abuse and co-occurring disorders to adults and their families. Today, it also offers DUI, drug testing and counseling services. Treatment works with the structure of an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and extended outpatient care, but SOS is also affiliated with the co-ed sober living residence, Amethyst House.
Treatment and Staff
All programs begin with an assessment so the duration and frequency of treatment can be determined. The minimum length of care is 30 days, but clients can attend longer if needed. The individualized treatment plans at SOS consist of group and individual therapy with an optional family component.
The IOP consists of at least 12 hours of treatment a week; with day, evening and weekend hours available to accommodate a variety of schedules. Upon completion, clients can step down to the extended outpatient level, where treatment consist of two to three hours a week; however, exact time commitment is dependent on the individual plan. Both levels of care are combined with required weekly 12-step meetings, substance abuse education classes and monitoring through random drug screenings (usually twice a month).
The SOS approach to recovery is rooted on evidence-based practices; like DBT, CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI) but also incorporates the 12-step philosophy. Gender-specific and specialized groups are available for those dealing with trauma, chronic relapse and co-occurring disorders. Psychiatric consultations and medication management are provided on site.
Staff includes MFTs and LCSWs, some of whom are also in recovery.
Extras
A multi-family group meets on the last Friday of the month. Referrals for counseling and support groups can be provided to family members as well.

Specialized Outpatient Services offers flexible office hours for clients who need treatment but have to continue to work or go to school. The expansive array of therapeutic modalities and sober living option make it a good choice for those seeking a flexible outpatient program in the Oklahoma City area.
