Southwest Behavioral Health Center Horizon House Review
Located in St. George, Utah, Southwest Behavioral Health Center was established to fulfill a much-needed demand for comprehensive mental health and substance abuse services in the state’s southwestern region. Southwest Behavioral Health Center has an outpatient program for substance abuse and addiction; Desert Haven, an inpatient option for women and women with small children; and Horizon House, a residential treatment facility for men and women.
Southwest Behavioral Health Center joins forces with Utah Medicaid to offer free or low cost treatment to financially challenged clients. Horizon House is located in Cedar City and offers gender-specific treatment in two different locations.
Accommodations and Food
The female-only Horizon accommodates nine women and Horizon House for men has a 15-bed capacity. Women are paired in double-occupancy rooms while men are lodged in groups of three or four. Rooms are furnished with twin or bunk beds, dressers, nightstands and lamps.
Clients are served three meals daily and entrees include enchiladas, stew, chicken, pork chops, vegetables and salads. Coffee is also provided.
Treatment and Staff
Prior to admission, clients undergo comprehensive evaluations to verify the severity of the substance use disorder and identify any potential co-occurring issues. The evaluation cost is $150. During assessment, clients and intake staff establish individualized treatment plans. If deemed necessary, clients requiring detox are directed to a local Southwest Behavioral Health Center facility that is equipped to provide it.
Southwest Behavioral Health Center uses a social model detox, which abstains from Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT). Those requiring medical detox are referred to a local hospital. The cost of any prescribed medications, including methadone and Suboxone, are not covered by Southwest Behavioral Health Center.
Treatment length is between 60 and 90 days. At Horizon House, evidence-based modalities, including CBT and DBT, along with a 12-step approach, are incorporated in the curriculum. Treatment includes group and individual therapy, and attendance at AA/NA meetings. Group topics cover gender-specific issues, trauma, relapse prevention, self-esteem, life skills, substance abuse education, communication skill building, step work and anger management. Additionally, clients are assigned chores and community service. These activities are designated to teach them valuable life skills.
Dual diagnosis support is provided for clients with co-occurring disorders. Besides therapy, clients requiring medication are referred to a psychiatrist for an evaluation, followed by medication management.
Residential service staff lives on the premises. The clinical staff at the women’s house includes two licensed addiction counselors, while the men’s house has between three and four licensed addiction counselors. Other licensed professionals include CSWs, psychiatrists and licensed psychologists that visit the facility and provide their services.

Aftercare includes outpatient treatment at a Southwest Behavioral Health Center facility.
