journeyThe Basics

Journey Recovery is an outpatient substance abuse program under the umbrella of the South Central Montana Regional Mental Health Center that serves adults and adolescents struggling with addiction and co-occurring disorders. Located in Billings, it has been helping residents of Yellowstone Country and surrounding areas since 1971.

Treatment and Staff

The first step in treatment is an assessment conducted by a staff therapist. Clients diagnosed with substance abuse issues and co-occurring disorders attend two individual therapy sessions before being placed in either a regular outpatient program or an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). IOP clients meet for three hours three times per week in coed groups with a maximum of 10 people per group. Using both CBT and DBT, group session topics include addiction education, peer pressure, relapse prevention, stress reduction and identifying triggers.

In addition to nine hours of groups each week, IOP clients also attend individual therapy once per week. Individuals with co-occurring disorders attend specific groups that address their diagnosis. In addition, these clients are seen by a psychiatrist for medication management. While attendance at outside groups such as AA/NA is not required, these services are recommended for additional support.

Those in the regular outpatient program attend group therapy once a week for 90 minutes along with a one-hour individual therapy session. Group topics are similar to those in IOP and change on a weekly basis. Both IOP and outpatient clients have morning and evening options available.

As with the adult outpatient programs, adolescents must schedule an assessment. The adolescent program offers treatment for young people between the ages of 13 and 17. There is no group therapy, with clients having individual sessions twice per week (more frequently if necessary) after school. Session topics are based on the individual assessment but may include peer pressure, setting goals, family dynamics and addiction studies. Although parental participation is strongly recommended, it is not required.

All Journey Recovery treatment tracks offer aftercare for clients as needed.

The treatment team consists of licensed substance abuse counselors, a psychiatrist and Master’s-level therapists. South Central Montana Regional Mental Health Center is open Monday through Friday from 8 am until 5 pm.

Extras

Journey Recovery’s “Prime for Life” program is intended for individuals who are court-ordered due to criminal charges. Prime for Life classes run for four weeks on Tuesday nights from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm. There is also a one-week fast-track option that meets Monday-Wednesday from 10 am to 2 pm.

In Summary

With Master’s-level therapists and psychiatrists on staff, Journey Recovery is a good choice for addicts with co-occurring disorders. While the adolescent program does not offer a group component, young people in recovery will benefit from individual sessions.
