Journey Home West Review
Solstice West’s transitional program known as Journey Home West is a private transitional living option for young women ages 16 to 21. Solstice West is for young women who have gone through some form of residential treatment or boarding school who are ready to venture out on their own but still need some structured support. Journey Home West is located in Layton, Utah. In addition to providing a safe and comfortable home-like environment during, it also teaches valuable life skills, facilitates therapy and provides educational opportunities. It’s worth mentioning, Journey Home West is the sister program to the Asheville, North Carolina transitional living, Journey Home East.
Accommodations and Amenities
Clients live in a private, four bedroom home in a cul-de-sac right outside of Salt Lake City. The residence is in close proximity to nightlife, museums, shopping, grocery stores, movie theaters and outdoor recreational activities. Clients in this program are also able to easily access employment and continued education.
The fully furnished home is spacious and comfortable, providing semi private bedrooms, TV and Wifi, and ample backyard space. There is a house manager on site at all times as well.
Rules and Regulations
Throughout the program, residents can expect to learn an array of life skills to help them live independently. These skills include personal hygiene, grocery shopping and meal prep, budgeting, time management, interviewing and resume building. During the day clients go to work or school. In the evenings there are house meetings and other group activities.
The program establishes “Core Principles” as an integral part of life in the home. These five principles include education, life skills, personal responsibility, social integration and healthy living. Within these guidelines clients work to improve things like task completion. They also learn new hobbies and skills. The principles hold them accountable on a daily basis, foster healthy relationships with friends and potential partners, and promote exercise on a regular basis. The goal is for the women to see the importance of taking care of their emotional, mental and spiritual health.
Weekly therapy is available to all clients. This includes two monthly individual sessions and two family sessions. There are also two group sessions each week that cover healthy lifestyles, and a processing group. In addition, as part of the transitional process, clients learn how to cook and are responsible for preparing their own meals at every mealtime.
There is a large treatment and support team in place here. It includes a primary therapist, counselors, and a house manager.
This is a structured program that provides the feeling of living independently without the stress that accompanies it. While the young women in this program are learning how to take care of themselves in the real world they are able to take the time to establish themselves and learn new skills. That growth will, in turn, be valuable when they actually do make the leap to living on their own.
