Solstice East Journey Home Transitional ProgramJourney Home East Review

Journey Home East is a transitional program for young women between the ages of 18 and 23. It is operated by Solstice East in Asheville, North Carolina. Journey Home East is the sister program to Journey Home, which is based out of Utah. The Journey Home programs are a step-down track from inpatient care provided by Solstice East and West. The purpose of this program is for clients to put into action the life skills they learned in treatment while still having a secure and structured home environment. Over the course of six months to a year, clients focus on healthy living, continuing education, employment skills and personal improvement.

Accommodations and Amenities

Clients live in a private three bedroom home located in a safe neighborhood close to downtown Asheville. The residence is spacious and comfortable, offering a living room with TV, a kitchen that is fully stocked with cooking utensils, and a backyard. Bedrooms are shared between two and four clients in each room.

The location of the house offers easily accessible employment and educational opportunities. There are also places to take yoga, dance, or Pilates. Several restaurants, shops and grocery stores are within walking or biking distance. There is also a local YMCA that provides a large gym at an affordable rate.

Rules and Regulations

The Journey Home program is designed for those who have gone through a program and are ready to live independently while still having support. The ideal client is someone who is ready to transition out of programs of any kind and live on their own within a certain amount of time. This is a volunteer only program, and Journey Home does not accept clients who are referred or court ordered to participate in a transitional program.

Journey Home East teaches, and lives by, the Five Core Principles for the young women in the program. These principles entail personal responsibility, education, life skills, healthy living and social integration. An example of these principles in action includes all the clients shopping for themselves and cooking their own meals, learning job and interview skills, taking care of themselves physically and emotionally, attending positive social events and dating, and either completing their high school education or enrolling in college or vocational training courses.

The young women learn how to set healthy boundaries and establish good communication between the housemates and in public settings. They are also required to attend house meetings and sessions with various staff members, including a wellness coach, therapist and academic advisor.

There is a house manager who lives on site.

Extras

The Journey Home offers several interventions if needed. This included individual and group therapy, and family counseling.

In Summary

Journey Home East is a great opportunity for young women who have been in a program setting in the past to stretch their independent living skill muscles while still having the luxury of extended support. The clients live in a lovely home in a fun part of the US, and get jobs, go to school and parttake in all the normalcy that goes along with being young. Journey Home East is a wonderful next step program for those who are ready to take the next step.
