The Basics
The outpatient option at Shepherd Hill, located 30 miles outside of Columbus in Newark, Ohio, is a comprehensive Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) individualized for adult men and women over the age of 18. Treatment is based on the 12-step philosophy; however, it also uses evidence-based approaches, psychoeducation and relapse prevention techniques in a structured and supportive environment.
Treatment and Staff
Shepherd Hill provides each client with an in-depth assessment of substance abuse history and a psychiatric evaluation, which in some cases, can take up to 72 hours. Based on results, therapists design an individualized treatment plan that places clients in either the IOP or a less intensive outpatient program. The IOP has two tracks, five or three days a week of group therapy for up to four hours a day. This program lasts for six or eight weeks and includes an optional Saturday group that includes family members. The step down to the standard outpatient, which can also be considered aftercare or an alumni program, is a group that usually meets once a week for an hour. In both programs, there are groups devoted to co-occurring disorders, which can include regular check-ins with a psychiatrist and medication management if necessary.
Treatment is comprised of frequent counseling sessions, educational lectures, AA and NA meetings and connecting families to additional support groups like Alanon. The therapeutic approaches include CBT, DBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI) as well as relapse prevention techniques, coping skills and identifying triggers. There are also specialty groups geared toward healthcare professionals who have dealt with their own addiction and gone through a treatment program. Clients and therapists work together to achieve personal goals and improve overall health and self-esteem.
The multidisciplinary staff of Shepherd Hill have experience and expertise through their combined years of working in the addiction field. This includes a medical staff of physicians and RNs, LCSWs, CADCs and psychologists.
Extras
The bi-weekly family program meets on Saturdays and is comprised of group therapy and education for family members and clients. The aftercare program is ongoing and free to all graduates of Shepherd Hill’s primary care programs.
