Sharp Mesa Vista OutpatientThe Basics

Sharp Mesa Vista is San Diego county’s largest privately-owned psychiatric hospital. It opened in 1963 and joined the Sharp Healthcare system, which includes several San Diego-area acute care and specialty hospitals, in 1998.

Sharp Mesa Vista offers inpatient detox and a dual diagnosis outpatient substance abuse treatment program. In addition to extensive evidence-based therapy, the outpatient program also uses the 12-step framework and encourages clients to explore additional peer support networks as well. Sharp Mesa Vista also has an outpatient program for teens, Changes, and treats adults and teens for numerous mental health and eating disorders.

Treatment and Staff

Clients must have both substance abuse and significant mental health diagnoses to enroll in the program. After a bio-psycho-social assessment, clients are given a treatment plan that usually includes 20 to 24 sessions of group therapy. Individual therapy is scheduled as-needed, though most clients are in the care of an outside psychiatrist prior to entering treatment. However, all client progress is monitored by the program’s supervising psychiatrists.

Clients usually attend group therapy four times a week for the first two weeks of treatment and then step down to three times a week thereafter. Daytime groups meet from 10:30 am to 2 pm and evening groups from 5:30 to 8:30 pm. Clients are also required to attend at least two peer support meetings each week, such as AA/NA, SMART Recovery or Celebrate Recovery.

Groups are led by Master’s-level therapists including MFTs and MSWs who utilize CBT, REBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and the Seeking Safety curriculum to help clients learn coping skills and relapse prevention. Dedicated groups are also available for clients who have suffered traumatic events and are diagnosed with PTSD.

The Changes program is targeted to adolescents between the ages of 13 and 18. Group therapy meets three times a week, after school, and uses CBT and the 12-step framework to help clients learn coping skills and resist peer pressure. Changes encourages family participation and hosts multifamily groups as well as family counseling sessions.

Extras

Clients needing a higher level of care may be referred to Sharp’s nearby residential program at Sharp McDonald Hospital, also in San Diego.

Sharp Mesa Vista provides a weekly family group for emotional support and recovery education for clients’ loved ones. Prior to discharge, clients work with their therapists to create an aftercare plan that includes on-going individual therapy and peer support meetings. Clients can also attend a weekly Dual Recovery Anonymous meeting held on-site.

In Summary

Sharp Mesa Vista’s dual diagnosis outpatient program provides extensive group therapy and psychiatric supervision for clients with co-occurring disorders. In addition, its weekly family group and Dual Recovery Anonymous meeting help clients create a resilient sober support network as they progress in recovery.
