The Basics
Dr. Henry Tewes founded Serenity House Counseling Services 30 years ago in Addison, Illinois, outside of Chicago. It has grown into a comprehensive treatment program that offers DUI evaluations, HIV education, an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), residential halfway homes and sober living homes for men and women.
Treatment and Staff
Set in a clinical treatment center on its sprawling campus, Serenity House offers an IOP to adolescent and adults. Clients are expected to attend 12 hours of sessions per week for five to seven weeks. Both individual and group therapy are incorporated. Treatment includes the evidence-based practices such as ACT, CBT and DBT, as well as dual diagnosis support. Twelve-step is not part of treatment but Serenity House does support clients’ 12-step work outside of the program. Those in need of detox services are referred to outside facilities.
Serenity House treats a total of 40 clients at a time. It holds sessions throughout the day for groups of eight to 10 mixed gender clients. Adolescents have their own group in the evenings separate from adults. Clients attend at least three individual sessions a week.
The mixed gender staff includes interns, support staff, LPCs, LPCCs, LSWs who are all CADCs. The staff-to-client ratio is one-to-six.
Extras
Serenity House’s aftercare program includes an alumni network and events. As a family program, Serenity House offers family education, counseling and family-friendly get-togethers. Quarterly life education seminars are available to clients. Serenity House’s IOP program also includes drug testing and DUI and HIV education.

Serenity House Counseling Services’ IOP program for adult and adolescents offers evidence-based treatment through individual and group therapy. Though group is the cornerstone of the program, Serenity House prioritizes creating a treatment plan based on the individual needs of the client.
