The Basics
Founded in 1991 by Kathryn S. Icenhower, SHIELDS For Families is a non-profit organization based in South Central Los Angeles. It works to provide free resources to the Los Angeles community; social services aimed at helping people get back on their feet, especially when mental illness is a problem. One of its many substance abuse offerings is Revelation, a dual diagnosis outpatient program for adolescents between the ages of 12 and 20 who are struggling with alcohol and drug dependency and mental illness. Having opened its doors in 2000, Revelation aims to achieve long-term recovery for its clients and to strengthen their roles within their families and the community by building on life skills—through education, counseling and psychiatric treatment.
Treatment and Staff
The bulk of Revelation’s clientele is referred from the Department of Probation, but walk-ins are also accepted. The program serves 60 to 75 clients a year. Treatment at Revelation is highly individualized: staff members take clients through an intensive intake assessment to determine what options best serve their needs. All clients are treated with comprehensive case management, individual and group therapy, family counseling, drug and alcohol education and urinalysis testing. CBT, trauma informed therapy, Seeking Safety and Motivational Interviewing are the primary therapeutic modalities. Clients attend treatment after school for three hours each day, for as long as their team deems necessary.
Clients have their own treatment teams, consisting of a therapist, a case manager, a substance abuse counselor, a psychiatrist and anyone else who may be needed in other special services.
Extras
In addition to substance abuse and mental health treatment, Revelation offers support to clients for vocational and educational training and job development activities by working with many organizations including Maxine Waters Employment Preparation Center and Los Angeles Trade Technical College.
SHIELDS for Families programs include residential services for adults and women with children and outpatient services for adults.
In Summary
Revelation is a much-needed program for adolescents that still allows them to attend school as they work through their substance abuse and mental health issues. Utilizing evidenced-based practices, intensive personal recovery approaches and a highly comprehensive approach to case management has consistently increased attendance at school for Revelation clients. This program is well-known within the Department of Child and Family Services for helping adolescents get back on track and out of the DCFS system.
