SHIELDS for Families Eden ProgramThe Basics

Founded in 1991 by Kathryn S. Icenhower, PhD, Xylina Bean, MD and Norma Mtume, SHIELDS For Families is an outreach organization in Los Angeles, California that offers many free resources to the local community. Apart from programs for mental health and substance abuse, they also offer social services and financial aid to struggling families. One of these services is the Eden Program, a dual diagnosis Intensive Outpatient (IOP) option for women based in Lynwood, California.

Treatment and Staff

Eden is a family-oriented day program that aims to provide holistic recovery for women and their families. Treatment relies on extensive case management and individualized care. Their facility uses evidence-based practices, including CBT, trauma-focused CBT, Seeking Safety, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and Managing and Adapting Practices (MAP).

Every client gets a specialized team consisting of a case manager, a therapist, a substance abuse counselor, a psychiatrist and a child development specialist (among others when necessary).

Treatment typically lasts 12 months, during which women are given a range of support to help them stabilize, return to the workforce or continue their education—sober housing resources are also available. After completing the program, alumni can receive further mental health services through an aftercare therapist.

Extras

Eden offers childcare for mothers in treatment and a therapeutic nursery for toddlers. They also provide vocational and educational services, and can help their clients find low-cost housing when treatment ends. Staff members from Eden can even legally advocate for those in their programs, if necessary (primarily when it would help reunite mothers with their children).

The facility also provides parenting and Mommy & Me classes to help clients build better relationships with their children. In addition to the valuable family time, these sessions also provide real-life coaching and modeling so that young mothers new parenting skills, all with trained professionals.

Finally, Eden offers comprehensive services for infants, toddlers and children up to five years old through an on-site child development center, including developmental assessments, early education activities and early literacy building.

In Summary

SHIELDS For Families’ Eden Program is a wonderful option for mothers who do not want residential treatment but still need significant support in putting their lives back together. The facility helps clients find recovery from both substance abuse and mental illness, but it also offers a wealth of other services to ensure a smooth re-entry into work and family life. In all, the Eden program takes a big picture look at the problem of addiction, understanding that any challenge to a newly sober mother can jeopardize her recovery.
