The Basics
Positive Alternatives, Inc. was founded in 1974 as a non-profit corporation providing group homes, housing services, and wellness programs for youth. With four locations spanning across the state of Wisconsin, clients have access to a network of supportive programs and staff that serves their individual needs. PA also offers an intervention program for youth and their parents or guardians called Positive Alternatives Support Services (P.A.S.S.) which provides outpatient substance abuse counseling and treatment in the Menomonie community.
Treatment and Staff
The P.A.S.S. program is intended to prevent at-risk youth from out-of-home placement by working with both the youth and their parents or guardians. Through individualized planning, clients are enrolled in workshops and classes intended to treat their unique issues or problems. Those having problems with substance abuse or chemical dependency are placed in the substance abuse track which includes educational lectures and lessons on the nature of addiction and relapse prevention, a group therapy session at least once a week, individual therapy once a month and family counseling once a week.
Clients requiring a more intensive program are enrolled in self-esteem building or emotional regulation groups as well. All therapies utilize DBT methodology. The 12-steps are not a part of the program, however clients are referred to a local chapter if requested by the client or their parent.
The staff at PA consists of LSWs and LPCs.
Extras
Recreational activities are also integrated into the P.A.S.S. program such as organized sports, community fitness classes and other social outings. In addition to the P.A.S.S. program, PA also has numerous other services and programs for clients and the broader community.
A substantial service that PA offers is group homes for at-risk youth and teens with temporary housing, day shelters and long-term residential support. PA also offers a variety of prevention services including a seminar for children of divorcing parents, after-school programs for youth and their families and intervention services such as day supervision and electronic monitoring.
In Summary
Although the substance abuse treatment program at PA is non-intensive, their workshops and prevention practices are excellent for at-risk youth and their parents or guardians. Through a variety of therapies, educational workshops and a strong emphasis on family involvement, clients are given a solid foundation for a life of sobriety.
