The Basics
Portage is a Canadian non-profit organization that helps people suffering from addiction and mental health issues. Since it was established in 1970, Portage has developed specialized drug rehabilitation programs for adolescents, adults, pregnant women and mothers with children, the aboriginal community, adults with mental health issues, and individuals involved in the criminal justice system. Portage operates nine addiction treatment programs, based on the therapeutic community approach, in its four facilities in Atlantic Canada, Québec and Ontario.
The Portage Québec City Adult program is an outpatient program for French-speaking adults, located in Québec City, Québec. It caters to clients who live locally and do not require inpatient care or have completed one the Portage programs at another location. The program includes evidence-based methods and the 12 steps, in addition to holistic methods.
Treatment and Staff
The Portage Québec Adult Day Centre treatment program runs Mondays through Fridays, from 9 am to 4 pm. The length of the program is three months but clients can continue for longer if necessary. Daily group and weekly individual therapy employ CBT, DBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). There is a strong emphasis on peer support, with the senior residents serving as peer counselors. The clients become familiar with AA and attend several on-site meetings a week.
The staff members of Portage Québec Adult are a multi disciplinary team of MDs, RNs and clinical behavioral health counselors. For those with co-occurring disorders, there is a nurse available for medication management services.
Extras
There are family counseling services incorporated into each client’s program, well as holistic options like massage therapy, mediation and yoga. Aftercare support is provided for up to two years, through regular communication and meetings with alumni counselors. For those who need even more support, Portage offers Back in Touch sessions, where clients currently in aftercare can return to regular programs at Portage for a short period. These sessions provide them with the opportunity to get back to basics and work through personal challenges within the context of the therapeutic community.
