The Basics
Located in Golden Valley, an affluent suburb of Minneapolis, Golden Valley Treatment Services opened its doors in November 2016 to provide outpatient Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) to opioid addicts in Minnesota’s Twin Cities. Currently, the clinic offers treatment plans using methadone combined with therapeutic services.
Golden Valley is a member of the Pinnacle provider network, which operates a number of outpatient and residential facilities throughout Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Virginia, Ohio, Minnesota and Michigan.
Treatment and Staff
After clients are assessed, they receive treatment plans that include individual and group therapy in tandem with medication dosing. Upon admission, clients must attend an orientation session which addresses HIV prevention and the clinic’s policies and procedures. In their first phase of treatment, which usually lasts 90 days, most clients have individual therapy and/or group therapy once a week. With successful attendance and clean drug screens, clients can step down to less frequent therapy sessions.
The treatment team at Golden Valley includes LCADCs, Master’s-level therapists, nurses and physicians. Groups use evidence-based methods such as CBT as well as Motivational Interviewing (MI) and Narrative Therapy and address early recovery issues, handling triggers and relapse prevention. Counselors may also help clients locate local peer support meetings such as Methadone Anonymous if they think it may benefit the client.
Golden Valley has an LMHC who visits weekly to provide dual diagnosis support. Clients needing medication management or a higher level of treatment for their mental health diagnosis are referred to nearby mental health clinics.
Clients receive take-home does on Saturdays since the clinic is closed on Sundays. After clients have completed 60 days of successful treatment, they can begin applying for additional take-home doses of methadone.
Golden Valley hopes that all clients will eventually not need MAT, and it works with them to create a treatment plan that culminates in tapering, if they desire. However, clients are not pressured to taper on any set time-line.
Extras
Golden Valley encourages families to take part in treatment and welcomes them to attend individual sessions for family counseling. It may also add family education and parenting groups in the future, if requested by clients.
