Phoenix House Re-EntryThe Basics

Founded in 1967 in New York, New York, Phoenix House is one of the largest non-profit substance abuse and addiction treatment agencies in the country, featuring more than 120 programs in ten states. Phoenix House was the creation of six newly clean heroin addicts, a psychiatrist Dr. Mitchell S. Rosenthal and a group of addiction counselors.

Founded in 1962 in Arlington, Virginia as Alcohol Rehabilitation, Inc., and later changing its name to Vanguard Services, the facility merged with Phoenix House in 2010 and became Phoenix House Mid-Atlantic, providing a wide range of treatment services including inpatient, outpatient, sober living and transitional care.

Phoenix House Mid-Atlantic’s Re-Entry program for men, including criminal justice clients, is located inside the same spacious Colonial Style residence that’s home to the Boys Recovery Lodge, the Phoenix House-Mid Atlantic Program for Men and Nuevo Dia for Spanish-speaking male clients.

Accommodations and Amenities

An imposing structure, the Colonial style four-story residence includes a coral-colored brick and white-shingled exterior with shamrock green window shutters. The house has a wrap around coral brick wall and the exterior landscaping boasts white cherry blossom trees and a pristine lawn.

The Re-entry program has a 12-bed capacity and men are paired in double-occupancy, furnished rooms that include twin beds, dressers and lamps.

Some residents participate in cooking inside the kitchen. Food is provided and usually the men eat their meals inside a dining hall. When they go to work, they are provided with bag lunches or have the option of getting their own food.

Rules and Regulations

This state-funded program helps men who have successfully completed residential or outpatient treatment, or have left prison, and need to make a smooth transition back into society. As with pretty much all of Phoenix House’s programs, residents receive individualized treatment plans. During the day, they are expected to work, look for work or attend a job-training program. Those who are unable to work must participate in community service.

Curfew is determined on an individual basis, by residents’ work schedule. Smoking is permitted outside in designated areas only. Other requirements include attending a minimum of five weekly 12-step meetings and having attendance slips signed by the meetings’ secretaries. These slips are turned to staff on a weekly basis.

Other services include case management, group therapy and vocational assistance; the latter is provided in collaboration with local employment agencies. Residents participate in evening group therapy, which utilizes evidence-based modalities, specifically CBT. Group topics include coping skills, relapse prevention, the 12 steps, co-occurring disorders, early recovery and life skills. Education on the disease of addiction is provided.

Clients requiring medication for co-occurring disorders are referred to a staff psychiatrist for an evaluation and medication management.

Extras

Prior to discharge residents are assisted with finding housing that is conducive to their living alcohol and drug-free lives.

In Summary

As with other Phoenix House programs, Re-entry allows newly clean and sober men, including criminal justice clients, a chance to get grounded in their recovery before they re-enter society. It offers comfortable accommodations, myriad resources for those new to recovery and plenty of therapeutic remedies as well. Men in the area searching for a safe, sober place to start restart their lives would do well to seek assistance here.
