Since 1975, PEER Services has provided outpatient substance abuse treatment to residents of the Chicago suburbs of Evanston, Northfield, New Trier, Maine and Niles Townships. With offices in Evanston and Glenview, Illinois, the organization provides a variety of options to adults and teens. There are adolescent programs available for clients ages 13 to 18 years old; including education and prevention classes, weekly individual and group therapy and a specialized Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). Adult services consist of outpatient, IOP, DUI treatment programs and Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) with required counseling. PEER Services also offers the unique choice of young adult programs, for clients ages 18 to 26 years old, and a track dedicated to older adults over 60.

Treatment and Staff

After an initial assessment, clients are matched with a program that best suits their needs. The most structured level of treatment is the IOP, which consists of eight weeks of group and individual therapy for three hours, three times a week. Adult, young adult and adolescent IOP groups are available, while the Aging Well older adult program focuses on individual and couples’ therapy rather than groups. For clients dealing with opiate addiction, MAT is provided using Suboxone or Methadone and all participants are required to enroll in the IOP and meet with on-site medical staff several times a week.  Additional mental health care is provided for clients with co-occurring disorders.

Therapy uses evidence-based methods, including CBT and DBT, as well as an introduction to 12-step recovery. In some cases, attendance at off-site AA/NA meetings is also required.

Once IOP is completed, clients typically reduce their program to standard outpatient, which consists of about two hours a week of individual or group therapy.

The team at PEER Services includes a physician, nurses, and Master’s-level therapists with credentials that include LCSW, CADC and LADC.

Extras

Following completion of primary care, clients join a 90-minute aftercare group that meets Wednesdays from 5:30 to 7 pm. Most participants are active for at least six weeks but the duration of this phase is flexible.

Additional services include education-based drug and alcohol awareness and DUI programs for all ages. This take place in a small group setting and the duration depends on the client’s treatment goals and legal situation. Peer Services is certified by the Illinois Department of Human Services Division of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse to provide court-ordered treatment.

In Summary

PEER Services provides an impressive range of treatment options for all ages. Adolescent and young adult clients can benefit from care that is designed to address their unique needs and participate in groups with peers facing similar circumstances. The Aging Well older adult program is a great addition to the facility and targets an under-served population of substance abusers. This is a great choice for those in the north Chicago area seeking comprehensive outpatient care.
