Pathways Real Life Recovery of Salt Lake City, Utah, offers home-based Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) using evidence-based and holistic approaches. Pathways opened its doors in 2007 when founder Michelle Amerman developed her own treatment system that is individualized and strength-based, providing CBT, family-based group therapy and person-centered, solution-focused methods.
Treatment and Staff
The online intake form expedites the admission process, wherein a therapist connects with the client to design a customized treatment plan. Broken down into phases, treatment addresses personal values, goals, substance abuse history and family life. While Pathways does not offer detox, it can provide referrals to outside agencies. It can also help supervise the process of Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for opiate withdrawal, if necessary.
In addition to individual progressing, a big part of this facility’s approach to treatment is incorporating the family into the process and helping them gain tools to help with client with prolonged sobriety, including relapse prevention techniques and communication skills.
Programs are tailored to fit each client’s needs and so there isn’t a one-size-fits-all mentality at Pathways. With several different therapeutic methods used, both traditional and holistic, programs employ three phases of recovery that aim to emphasize hope, change, gratitude and freedom. The healing process begins by acknowledging past trauma or the root of the client’s addiction, building trust, self-empowerment and reconstructing personal belief systems. Treatment modalities include EMDR, DBT; art, music and equine therapy; in addition to recreational activities and exercise. There are also parent-children sessions and group family counseling.
The program typically entails home visits once or twice a week during the first phase for intensive individual therapy that addresses addictive behaviors and self-esteem. Phase two consists of less scheduled treatment days as the client works on facing triggers and developing ways to make healthy choices. The idea behind home-based treatment as opposed to a residential program is that the client doesn’t have to re-learn how to live in their own after treatment is complete. This is part of why the family involvement and cooperation is imperative.
Pathways does not use 12-step recovery methods and considers itself an alternative to AA/NA. It is also equipped to treat clients with a dual diagnosis, such as bipolar disorder, depression or anxiety.
The counseling staff consist of LCSWs, LPCs, MFTs and Master’s-level addiction counselors. There are also medical doctors (some who are addictionologists) as well as life coaches and recovery specialists.
Extras
Additional services include a three-year aftercare program where staff members stay in touch and provide check-ins with clients and their families. The facility also offers a variety of other addiction programs for gambling, eating and pornography. It also facilitates genetic and hormone testing, as well a sober companion program. There are marriage counseling options as well.
