Brooklyn New YorkThe Basics

Located in Brooklyn, New York, NYU Lutheran had humble beginnings in 1883 when it was originally called the Norwegian Lutheran Deaconess Home and Hospital. Originally the hospital served an expansive European immigrant population, but over the decades, services have diversified and expanded to include many sub facilities and remote units to serve the broader community throughout New York City. Specialty facilities began to blossom in 1967 throughout Southwest Brooklyn under the Family Health Centers (FHC) umbrella. Currently, the FHC of Sunset Terrace offers outpatient chemical dependency treatment and services for co-occurring disorders.

Treatment and Staff

NYU Lutheran FHC Sunset Terrace provides outpatient services for adults and adolescents using evidence-based treatment practices that include dual diagnosis support. Specialized support is also available for clients with specific health conditions including HIV/AIDS, as well as tracks that focus on LGBT issues. The multi-lingual clinical staff provide culturally sensitive care and can readily assist a diverse population.

Before clients are fully admitted into the program, they are assessed by the intake staff. The screening determines any undiagnosed conditions and any need for medication management.

If clients require a detox prior to admission they are admitted and stabilized in the hospital. Psychiatrists, doctors and nurse practitioners oversee any medical conditions and provide Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) using Suboxone or other addiction medications.

During treatment, clients attend a range of therapeutic activities overseen by LCSWs and CATCs. Attendance of group therapy is a focal point for treatment. Counselors use CBT and DBT techniques during both groups and independently scheduled individual therapy. Due to individualized treatment, each client attends treatment activities at varying frequencies and duration of treatment is dependent on individual progress.

Extras

Sunset Terrace also offers a special family program as well as services for children and individuals who are suffering from trauma. Special groups are also held for domestic violence situations and neglect.

A range of specialized groups are also available to support the LGBT community, uniting individuals who share similar life experiences while struggling with mental health issues. Gender identity and sexual identification of all types are welcomed and supported.

In Summary

NYU Lutheran FHC Sunset Terrace offers chemical dependency services for adults and adolescents. All treatment efforts are individualized allowing focused attention and care uniquely tailored to their needs. A team of credentialed mental health and medical professionals create a space for individuals to recover and heal from past traumas while receiving support from a peer network to lay a foundation for lasting recovery.
