The Basics
Central Minnesota’s Northern Pines Mental Health Center’s Chemical Health Services (NPHMC-CHS) has an adolescent outpatient facility in Brainerd. Established in 1964, the large network provides mental and chemical health services across six counties. Its current Chemical Health Services programs were established four years ago and serve adults and adolescents over the age of 13.
Treatment and Staff
The adolescent outpatient program treats boys and girls, ages 13 to 17 (and 18 year-olds who are still in high school). It implements Integrated Dual Disorder Treatment, which includes evidence-based practices, dual diagnosis support and bio-psychosocial treatment within an individual and group therapy setting. The length of the program is three to four months long. Clients attend group two times a week after school and during the summer. Sessions include work with an LADC to create personal treatment goals. Frequency of individual therapy is based on the needs of the client. Clients with co-occurring disorders also meet with an LMHC.
Twelve-step is not included in the program but clients can choose to incorporate it into their recovery outside of treatment. The facility accepts 15 to 20 clients at a time and has three to four full-time staff members. Outpatient services do not include detox.
Staff includes psychiatrists, LADC, LPCC, LASW.
Extras
For aftercare, clients are connected with a long-term therapist. Family education includes group therapy every six weeks and individual family conferences are available when needed.
In Summary
The Northern Pines Mental Health Center’s Chemical Health Services adolescent outpatient facility is a short-term program designed to accommodate the schedules of its target demographic. Using evidence-based practices and added support for dual diagnosis, the facility is a viable option for young people seeking a foundation for recovery outside of traditional 12-step methods.
