The Basics
Muskingum Behavioral Health provides outpatient substance abuse treatment in Zanesville, Ohio, a small city 55 miles east of Columbus. A non-profit organization, Muskingum has been in operation since 1981 and offers both a standard track and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for substance abuse as well as gambling addiction. Muskingum’s current CEO, Steve Carrel, is also a professor of social work and chemical dependency at Ohio University.
Treatment and Staff
After an assessment, clients are enrolled in either the standard outpatient or IOP track. Clients in standard outpatient meet for group therapy once or twice a week and have individual therapy as-needed. Clients in the IOP meet in groups four times each week and have individual sessions at least once a week. The duration of each program is progress-based and the average treatment plan is 12 weeks long. Clients in the IOP are required to attend weekly 12-step meetings in addition to therapy. Clients in standard outpatient are not required but are encouraged to attend 12-step meetings. As they progress in treatment, many IOP clients step down to the standard outpatient program.
Therapy groups contain 12 or fewer participants and are led by Master’s-level therapists such as MSWs with addiction counseling credentials, including LCDC. Therapists use evidence-based treatment including CBT, DBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Therapists are qualified to treat clients with co-occurring disorders as long as substance abuse is their primary diagnosis.
Extras
Muskingum offers dedicated therapy groups for adolescents. It hosts a weekly aftercare group that focuses on relapse prevention and many community-based recovery programs and activities such as the STARS summer camp for girls and a community Medication Take Back Day.
