The Basics
Morrison Child and Family Services has been providing help to Portland, Oregon’s children and teens since 1947. Its Breakthrough Day Treatment program provides long-term outpatient substance abuse treatment for adolescent boys ages 12 to 18. Young men who have unstable family lives can also receive housing during treatment, living in a Morrison-run residence or with specially-trained “proctor parents.” Breakthrough Day Treatment has been in operation since the 1980s.
Treatment and Staff
Treatment at Breakthrough is usually nine to 12 months and sessions last the entirety of each week day. It is designed to provide each boy with significant personal attention. The program usually has seven to 14 boys in treatment at one time.
Boys attend school on-site each day, in small group classes. In addition to school work, boys have group and individual therapy several times each week. Therapy uses CBT, DBT, Seeking Safety and Motivational Interviewing (MI). All treatment uses trauma-informed care. Breakthrough also hosts one on-site 12-step meeting each week, which clients are required to attend, and they receive coaching in using the 12-step framework.
Social skills training is a large part of Breakthrough, as most of its clients struggle with behavioral issues as well a substance abuse. Boys have on-going classes on communication skills and problem-solving, as well.
The treatment team at Breakthrough includes LADCs and Master’s-level therapists, including MSWs. Clinicians are experienced treating co-occurring disorders, and a child psychiatrist and psychiatric nurse practitioner are available for medication management.
Extras
Family therapy is an integral part of treatment at Breakthrough. The program may also have family group therapy when enough families wish to participate. Breakthrough’s therapists follow-up with each family for 90 days after discharge, making sure each client is acclimating well. They’ll also work with each client and family to create an aftercare plan that may include additional therapy and peer-support meetings.
