The Basics
Overlooking the Pacific on beautiful Dana Point, California, Monarch Shores offers individualized treatment for clients struggling with substance abuse. Since 2005, this boutique facility has provided on-site detox, a residential program and dual diagnosis support. Monarch specializes in holistic treatment plans for men and women.
Accommodations and Food
Monarch Shores provides a variety or room options, at varying levels of privacy. Clients are able to select fully private rooms with en suite, private rooms with shared bath and rooms and bathrooms shared with one or two other clients. All of these options come with comfortable linens, toiletries, flat screen TV and large closet spaces. The environment of the entire facility is more like a beach getaway than a clinical setting, with ceiling-to-floor windows, patios, luxury fitness center and ocean views. Cellphones and laptops are allowed. The intimate atmosphere has space for only six clients at a time. A team of chefs prepares gourmet meals, and food is nutritious and is catered to individual needs.
Treatment and Staff
Clients participate in holistic treatment plans that include individual and group therapy following the CBT model, 12-step programs, fitness and nutritional training, recreation and other activities. Treatment length is typically 30 days, and includes around 15 hours of individual treatment each week. Clients requiring medically monitored detox from alcohol and drugs (excluding opiates) are accommodated, and medications are provided under the supervision of an on-site nurse.
While 12-step programs are useful for many, those that do not wish to go that route have opportunity to practice SMART recovery. Both approaches are supported and work is completed at the client’s own pace. Group therapy, which is offered daily, covers topics such as coping skills, behavior modification, identifying triggers, anger management and communication skills.
A comprehensive dual diagnosis program is offered for clients with co-occurring disorders. This includes tailored group and individual therapy, psychiatric medication management and family therapy if necessary. Education sessions for the client and loved ones are recommended to provide information about diagnosis and relapse prevention.
Additional therapeutic modalities available include trauma therapy, grief counseling, DBT, guided imagery, psychoeducation and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Licensed clinicians facilitate all groups and sessions, most have Master’s-level credentials. Staff includes a doctor, psychiatrist, therapist, nurses, counselors and case managers and the staff to client ratio is a cozy three to one.
Extras
In addition to a vast number of traditional therapeutic methods, Monarch Shores offers holistic healing for not additional charge in the form of massage therapy, equine therapy, yoga and acupuncture.
In Summary
Monarch Shores provides a luxurious environment for recovery. The availability of private rooms with en suite bathrooms and medically-supervised detox make this a great choice for those who need serious care, but want to avoid a clinical setting. Most PPO insurance is accepted and a huge array of therapeutic modalities are offered under the care of highly credentialed staff. The amenities and ocean views will certainly ease some of the anxiety of entering treatment, and make this an excellent place for healing and self-discovery.
