The Midtown Center for Treatment and Research is a not-for-profit outpatient program for alcohol and substance abuse. Located in midtown Manhattan, it was founded 30 years ago by Cornell Medical College and its mission is to evaluate and treat chemically dependent clients and their families while researching cutting edge techniques for substance abuse treatment.

Treatment and Staff

The state of New York’s Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) licensed the Midtown Center as a Medically Supervised Ambulatory Substance Treatment Abuse Program. While it doesn’t offer detox it does work with outside agencies and provides referrals. Initial intake includes a medical evaluation and a urine toxicology screening and well as a psychiatric evaluation, if needed. From there, an individualized treatment plan is created that includes a schedule and length of care based on the specific needs of the client.

Treatment works within the structure of individual and group therapy using CBT, EMDR, Motivational Interviewing (MI), Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) and NeurofeedbackDual diagnosis support is also available. Various groups target specific needs including didactic groups, anger management, assertiveness training, combat veterans, dual diagnosis, group psychotherapy in mixed gender and gender-specific groups—each with four to 15 clients. Individual therapy occurs weekly or monthly, depending on the treatment plan.

The staff includes two psychiatrists, one PhD psychologist, two LCSWs, two CASACs, one License Clinical Art Therapist and multiple mental health counselor interns.

Extras

Graduates of The Midtown Center receive one month of aftercare, which includes group therapy and relapse prevention.

Family therapy and education, AIDS counseling and education, and Case management are also included. Additionally, the program works with the Headstrong Project to help veterans with PTSD and their families.

The Midtown Center For Treatment and Research is part of the Weill Cornell Medicine network, which can provide referrals to world-class physicians at the New York-Presbyterian Hospital and Weill Cornell Medical Center Manhattan.
