The Basics
The Melillo Center for Mental Health is an outpatient substance abuse treatment facility serving the Glen Cove community on Long Island, New York. Incorporated in 1977, the Melillo Center is a tax-exempt charitable organization that offers substance abuse treatment on a sliding scale. Named for the first executive director, Angelo J. Melillo, MCMH exclusively provides treatment for adults and families who live in Nassau County on the north shore of Long Island.
Treatment and Staff
The Melillo Center treats each client based on an established individualized treatment plan developed by staff. Prior to enrollment, clients must undergo a bio-psycho-social assessment at intake with a staff counselor. There are no detox services available through MCMH, but the facility is closely affiliated with Glen Cove hospital for mental health care and referrals are available as needed. Dual-diagnosis support is available, including general mental health care as well as medication management through MCMH’s psychiatric care program.
All therapeutic practices utilize evidence-based treatment including CBT and DBT techniques which facilitate a healthy shift towards wellness. The main form of treatment is group therapy allowing clients to engage in peer-supported recovery. The average group is held with five-to-10 clients, with most groups co-ed—though gender-specific groups are available to create a safe and comfortable environment. Groups are held throughout the week in the mornings and early afternoons allowing for a flexible treatment schedule.
Individual therapy is available once per week and may be scheduled more frequently at the discretion of the counselor depending upon individual client need. MCMH employs LCSWs, Licensed Mental Health Counselors (LMHCs) and CASACs. The chemical dependency program has approximately 25 clinical staff members in total to assist their client base. Clients are encouraged—but not required—to attend off-site 12-step meetings in the community. All clients are drug tested weekly to ensure abstinence.
Extras
The Melillo Center offers couples counseling services for spouses or significant others which can be scheduled through the client’s counselor. Couples work to rebuild lost trust, learn how to deal with the possibility of relapse and how to create a home environment conducive to recovery.
