san rafael californiaThe Basics

Located in San Rafael, California, Marin Treatment Center is a non-profit organization providing substance abuse and mental health treatment to the community since 1973. MTC is CARF-accredited facility and is state-certified and funded by Marin County Health and Human Services. Outpatient addiction services include Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP), general outpatient care, a 21-day detox program and medication assisted treatment for opiates. Using the 12 steps and relapse prevention techniques, clients are taught how to live in sobriety.

Treatment and Staff

MTC specializes in treating those who are addicted to opiates. Following an initial evaluation, individualized treatment plans are developed for each client. IOP offers the highest level of support, with three hours of therapy three times a week. Clients are recommended to stay in this program for at least three months. Treatment involves a mixture of individual and group therapy.

Treatment at MTC uses evidence-based therapies such as CBT and DBT allowing clients to identify their triggers and correct negative thought patterns. Topics typically include relapse prevention, coping skills, early recovery skills and anger management. The 12 steps also play a crucial role to recovery, with clients required to attend a certain amount of meetings per week. While this number varies from person to person, attending 90 meetings in 90 days is highly encouraged. Referrals to local 12-step meetings in the community are provided upon request. Support for mental health issues such as depression and anxiety can also be addressed during therapy.

Once clients have completed IOP they can step down into general outpatient. This program is structured similarly to IOP, though it meets with less frequency. Group and individual therapy occur once a week to keep clients supported and accountable.

The 21-day detox program uses methadone to help clients safely withdraw from opiates. Following an assessment, clients come in every day before gradually reducing their doses as they progress. There is also a long-term program using methadone which usually lasts for six months. Suboxone treatment is typically used in conjunction with IOP or general outpatient. The Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) programs are not abstinence based but instead focus on harm reduction.

The staff at MTC consists of psychologists, two doctors, one nurse practitioner and CADCs. IOP usually has eight clients at a time while general outpatient has two to four.

Extras

Aside from the above, MTC offers drug testing, individual psychotherapy for mental health, court-mandated programs such as drug diversion education, HIV and Hepatitis C services and overdose response kits. In addition, community services such as the STAR and Odyssey Programs bring therapy to those who are homeless or involved with the criminal justice system. For those interested in training, the facility accepts Master’s- and Doctorate-level graduate students from Bay Area graduate schools and post graduates.

In Summary

Overall, Marin Treatment Center offers a range of services to treat substance abuse. From medicated detox to IOP, the facility offers both high- and low-level intensity programs to fit any client’s needs. Thanks to small group sizes and a range of staff members, MTC offers individualized and quality care to clients in Marin County.
