The Basics
Malibu Balance Day Treatment offers an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for adults and adolescents in Calabasas, California, an upscale suburb of Los Angeles located in the San Fernando Valley. Malibu Balance also operates a residential program under the name of Balance Treatment in Calabasas and offers outpatient treatment in San Luis Obispo, farther up the coast.
Malibu Balance is a non-12-step based program that includes family processing groups, psychoeducation groups and family participation. The center has been in operation for over five years.
Treatment and Staff
IOP clients meet for group therapy twice a week, in addition to a mandatory multi-family group once a week. The adult group meets Tuesday and Thursday evenings and has its family group on Saturdays. The adolescent group meets Monday and Thursday evenings and has its family group on Wednesday evenings.
Individual therapy is not included in the IOP, but clients can schedule separate individual sessions with members of their treatment team as they see fit. Most IOP clients complete their treatment plan within eight to 12 weeks.
Each week, one group includes a SMART Recovery meeting, which exposes clients to the CBT-based peer support framework that they can continue to participate in after they complete the IOP. In addition to CBT, groups use DBT and a variety of other evidence-based modalities to help clients learn relapse prevention and develop coping skills.
The treatment team at Malibu Balance includes LMFTs, psychologists and the center’s founder, psychiatrist Dr. Ronald Sager, who provides dual diagnosis support, including medication management. The treatment team also coordinates expressive arts and recreational therapy activities. Malibu Balance encourages all clients to take a holistic approach to their recovery and identify the activities and goals that encourage them to grow and remain abstinent.
Extras
As clients near the end of their treatment plan, Malibu Balance works with them to create a comprehensive aftercare plan that may include on-going therapy and peer support meetings. The center also provides case management for clients who needs support coordinating care and accessing additional services.
