Fort Worth TexasThe Basics

Lena Pope Counseling Services was founded in 1930 after two parents lost their son to diphtheria. Ewell Hicks Pope and Lena Holston Pope built a home dedicated to providing services for children and their families in Fort Worth, Texas.

In the years following its founding, Lena Pope has expanded services and locations to accommodate adults, adolescents and children with mental health concerns. The substance abuse treatment options include outpatient treatment, Drug Court services for adolescents and families, parenting groups and assessments through facilities and schools. All treatment activities incorporate evidence-based practices including CBT and DBT.

Treatment and Staff

All substance abuse treatment options at Lena Pope are made available through partnerships with state, city and county agencies and services are available for residents of Tarrant County who do not require detox or residential treatment.

Prior to enrollment, clients must schedule an appointment with the intake staff for a bio-psycho-social assessment. Substance abuse services are provided out of the Fort Worth and Arlington offices. Dual diagnosis support is available for individuals with co-occurring disorders including depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder.

The adolescent program for substance abuse is designed for clients between the ages of 12 and 17. The program runs for 12 weeks in total and focuses on curriculum that assists young people who are beginning their recovery. Clients stay in regular contact with their case managers to ensure they are still working towards recovery goals. Through group therapy, clients work on identifying triggers, developing coping skills, anger management and relapse prevention. Some groups also focus on psycho-education helping clients understand the nature of addiction. Parent involvement is required to ensure that the home is a safe environment to support lasting recovery. Additional referrals may be available if needed during the course of treatment.

The adult substance abuse program follows an individualized treatment program dependent on the client’s progress. Clients participate in individual therapy with their primary therapist as well as group sessions which include trauma-informed care topics based on parenting skills, relationship skills, anger management and relapse prevention. Adults are also required to attend 12-step meetings during the course of their treatment to develop an outside support network. Family therapy and couples counseling are optional but recommended for all clients.

All staff are Master’s-level therapists with diverse backgrounds and credentials including MSWs and LCSWs.

Extras

The juvenile and family Drug Court programs are developed for individuals with non-violent drug offenses. The juvenile court program provides outpatient counseling, court follow-up appointments, case management and in-home appointments. These programs are individualized to the client and are designed to prevent future occurrences. The family Drug Court works with CPS to provide safe shelter for children and adolescents who have parents who are actively using. Neglect and abuse commonly go hand in hand, and Lena Pope provides safety and trauma counseling for families afterwards.

In addition to mental health services, Lena Pope offers school and community based counseling that takes place on school campuses and in the home. Social and behavioral skills are emphasized so that children and families may heal and move forward. Additionally, there is an early childhood program and Chapel Hill, a charter school available through Lena Pope.
