The Basics
Located in Cleveland Ohio, Key Decisions/Positive Choices was founded in 1999 by chemical dependency counselor Owen R. Taylor. This community-based, multi-service substance abuse program supports the needs of clients through therapy, education and the 12 steps. Under the guidance of therapists, psychiatrists, social workers and counselors, clients are fully supported through the recovery process. This facility also offers DUI education and remedial driver training for those who are court-mandated to seek treatment. All services are offered on a sliding fee scale or pro bono, when appropriate.
Treatment and Staff
Adult and adolescent treatment begins with a behavioral health assessment to determine which program is best suited for the individual. A variety of therapeutic services such as individual therapy, group therapy and court appointed courses are offered. Detox is not available.
Evidence-based treatment modalities such as CBT and DBT are used in both the group and individual setting. Individual counseling sessions are usually one-hour in length, offering one-on-one time with a licensed social worker. Weekly group therapy is also available, providing the space for members to role-play real-life scenarios and practice interpersonal skills in a safe environment. Group topics include relapse prevention, anger management, employment, introduction to the 12-steps and life skills. Feedback and encouragement from others improves bonds, communication and self-esteem.
A family program is offered to help clients with boundaries, trust and family dynamics. Parenting and life skills support are also available.
The staff includes licensed substance abuse counselors, two Master’s-level social workers and a Master’s-level psychologist.
Extras
The 72-hour driver intervention program screens, evaluates, educates and refers individuals who have been arrested for or convicted of DUI offenses. The program is accredited by the Ohio Department of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services and is popular throughout northeast Ohio. Often times, funding is available for this program as long as clients provide a document showing they receive public assistance, or can prove their income falls under the US poverty guidelines.
In Summary
Key Decisions/Positive Choices provides basic adult and adolescent treatment for substance abuse. This facility does not offer an intensive plan, but their services are very affordable or free. As a result, this program is best suited for those facing financial hardship who may not need a high level of support.
